About The Position

Southern Cancer Center is hiring a Lab Assistant Lead to join our team at our Springhill location. This role is key to delivering safe, accurate, and timely laboratory services that support patient care. The Lab Assistant Lead is responsible for collecting and processing patient specimens, maintaining precise documentation, supporting testing workflows, and helping ensure the lab operates under quality, safety, and regulatory standards

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Minimum seven (7) years of laboratory experience.
  • This role requires full range of motion, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination for operating and manipulating laboratory equipment.
  • Work includes prolonged sitting/standing, reaching/carrying, and occasional lifting/carrying up to 40 lbs.
  • Corrected vision, color perception, hearing within normal range, and legible handwriting are required.

Responsibilities

  • Collect appropriate patient specimens as ordered and ensure correct patient identification procedures are followed.
  • Perform phlebotomy and sample collection procedures as needed; prepare patients when necessary (including vitals).
  • Accurately document work in accordance with the quality assurance program (accessioning logs, test report logs, QC logs, equipment records/checklists, maintenance logs).
  • Perform specimen analysis (chemistry, hematology, immunology) as directed and assist with testing procedures per guidelines.
  • Process incoming lab orders and results; chart patient results accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Send specimens to reference laboratories when testing is not performed in-house.
  • Maintain inventory of viable supplies and restock/organize the lab area to support daily operations.
  • Operate designated laboratory equipment effectively and perform daily/weekly/monthly instrument maintenance as indicated (including lot number documentation for controls, calibrators, reagents).
  • Identify troubleshooting needs and coordinate technical services support when required.
  • Support patient flow as needed and assist with laboratory-related workflow tasks.
  • Arrange for transfusion of blood products when ordered by a physician (as applicable to site process).
  • Follow safety, quality assurance, OSHA compliance laws, and Universal Precaution procedures; properly dispose of hazardous materials and maintain a clean work environment.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all information related to patients and medical staff.
  • Perform CLIA waived or moderately complex testing under close supervision and in compliance with personnel/testing standards.
