About The Position

The Laboratory Assistant performs support duties for efficient laboratory operations. This position assists with the collection, handling and preparation of specimens for laboratory testing as directed and according to established departmental standards. Duties include verification and labeling of specimens, handling and transporting specimens, preparation of slides, and maintaining necessary supplies. This role may include the collection of blood according to established procedures in a manner that supports quality patient care. This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to team work and cooperation.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or highest level of degree required
  • BLS required effective 1/1/2021, existing incumbents with HSAED will be required to renew with BLS all new hires effective this same date are required to have BLS within 6 months of hire or transfer
  • Knowledge of medical terminology required; knowledge of laboratory information system utilization must be acquired after 3 months on the job training.
  • Must have the ability to distinguish colors.
  • Strict compliance with laboratory Fraud and Abuse policies and requirements is an employment condition.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field strongly preferred for Histology and Cytology positions.
  • ASCP/Phlebotomy certification or registry eligible preferred. Previous hospital phlebotomy experience may be substituted for certification.
  • Prior experience preferred, but not required.
  • Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skill will be required for this position within 30-60 days from date of hire.
