The Laboratory Assistant I will follow the guidelines set by CLIA, and the CA Codes (bpc: 1212) unlicensed laboratory personnel (“aides”) cannot perform tests. Unlicensed persons require direct and constant supervision during the entire time they are assisting in analytical phase (bpc: 1206 (a) (8)); unlicensed persons performing pre-analytical and post analytical require supervision and control of licensed person (bpc: 1269). This person performs: 1) computer entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties, 2) may work alone or in various size groups on any shift on any day of the week under direct supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, 3) should demonstrate good telephone etiquette and be able to greet patients and other visitors in a polite and friendly manner, 4) have good communication skills, 5) should demonstrate adequate knowledge of the usual terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory, 6) demonstrate good working knowledge of phlebotomy and the equipment used in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients, 7) processing microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens, 8) processing specimens for reference laboratory, 9) stocking and ordering of routine supplies, 10) keeps storage areas, trays, centrifuges, and collection areas clean, 11) must be able to move throughout the facility without assistance and perform blood collection in a safe and efficient manner, 12) process or place specimens on laboratory instrumentation in accordance with established policy and procedures and, 13) under (bpc: 1269) with proper documentation and training can perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, assisting in quality control procedures. Special projects or other assignments may be given with expectations to be completed in a specified timeframe.

Requirements

  • CPR within 30 days of employment if job includes direct patient contact.

Nice To Haves

  • Certificate of CPT 1 in the State of California preferred.
  • Minimum 1- 2 year clinical laboratory experience preferred.
