About The Position

The Kitchen Assistant provides strong support for the Food Service Department, mainly in the Kitchen or cafeteria area. A Kitchen Assistant prepares and serves large amounts of food and maintains a safe and clean work environment in a health care setting. They prepare and serve meals according to nutrition and hygiene standards, clean kitchen surfaces, equipment, and dishes, following the Department of Health guidelines to handling food. Assist in all general activities as requested by First and Second Cook in a fast-paced kitchen.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with meal preparation as needed/instructed by the First Cook or Second Cook.
  • Follow all instructions/directions given by the First Cook/Second Cook.
  • Set up in front of the House according to Food Service standards.
  • Serve all meals executed during the shift applying the highest standard of customer service.
  • Apply portion control and waste reduction techniques as directed by First Cook.
  • Clean all eating/cooking utensils and hardware as outlined by the Board of Health.
  • Maintain kitchen sanitation in compliance with standards set by Housing Works Food Services and the Board of Health.
  • Store all inventoried food (dry storage, refrigerated, and frozen) products according to the Department of Health standards.
  • Maintain all records required by the Board of Health (i.e. refrigeration temperature logs, dishwashing temperature logs, material safety data sheets, etc.)
  • Build relationships with other Housing Works Departments and demonstrate excellent teamwork and growth within the department and organization.
  • Listens to questions and concerns, evaluates issues and possible solutions, fixing the problem as appropriate, working with others to address systemic problems.
  • Maintains a high level of professionalism, integrity and communication with other staff.
  • Have a high customer service on the delivery of services.
  • Knowledge of Food Services standards and Department of Health guidelines on handling food and also monitor stock levels by securing inventory following the stock requirements by the kitchen manager.
