About The Position

METECS is seeking a junior engineer to support the Simulation Data & Trick Systems (SDTS) environment that underpins NASA human‑spaceflight simulation workflows. You’ll work hands-on with Linux systems, Trick-based simulations, and internal tooling to maintain reliable lab operations, automate data and backups, and contribute to C/C++/Python utilities. The role is designed as an understudy to the current SDTS lead, with a growth path to take on primary responsibilities over time.

Requirements

  • Solid Linux proficiency, including: terminal text editors, compression tools, basic networking, package managers, kernel/driver familiarity, user/group administration, graphics/display setup, remote file transfer, disk formatting, cron, and CPU core isolation.
  • Basic SysAdmin / IT skills: security hygiene, data backups, OS/software updates.
  • Programming in C/C++ and Python (academic or project experience acceptable).
  • Version control experience with Git.
  • Citizenship or lawful permanent resident required due to federal position.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with Trick Sim Software (moderate/advanced exposure ideal)
  • TCL scripting familiarity.
  • Lab support experience for simulation or embedded SW teams; basic Windows/macOS support.
  • Interest in human spaceflight simulation environments and NASA/JSC workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and administer Linux workstations/servers used for simulation development and test: package management, kernel/driver updates, hardware compatibility checks, graphics/display configuration, user/group and file permissions, cron jobs, and CPU core isolation.
  • Manage backups and secure, remote file transfer for simulation artifacts and logs; perform routine data integrity checks.
  • Set up and image systems for new users; troubleshoot networking and lab connectivity.
  • Contribute to Trick simulation workflows and small tools/utilities in C/C++ and Python; maintain scripts and TCL where needed.
  • Support basic Windows/macOS client tasks in a mixed‑OS environment.
  • Use Git for version control and collaborate via standard METECS processes.
  • Document runbooks, SOPs, and tips for repeatable operations and onboarding.
