About The Position

The Junior Structural Designer & BIM Technician supports the Engineering Department in preparing drawings, models, and digital design deliverables for marine and heavy civil structures including bulkheads, dolphins, trestles, bridges, piers, and terminals. This position is designed for early-career designers who are eager to learn structural and marine drafting, 3D modeling, and BIM workflows. The Junior Designer will work closely with senior engineers, modelers, and field teams to produce accurate plans and models while developing their technical and digital skill sets. This role plays an important part in Orion’s digital transformation, assisting in the integration of construction feedback, field data, and modeling technologies to enhance design quality, constructability, and collaboration. The position offers structured mentorship and a clear growth path into advanced modeling, BIM coordination, and design leadership roles.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Drafting & Design Technology, Architecture, or related field.
  • 0–3 years of experience in structural or civil drafting (internships count).
  • Basic proficiency in AutoCAD required; exposure to Revit, Civil 3D, or Navisworks a plus.
  • Strong interest in marine structures and heavy civil construction.
  • Ability to read engineering plans and translate markups into accurate drawings.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and take direction well.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare engineering drawings including plans, sections, and details using AutoCAD, Revit, and Civil 3D.
  • Assist in developing 3D models of existing and proposed structures under senior guidance.
  • Support construction drawing production such as pile layouts, reinforcement details, and general arrangement sheets.
  • Revise drawings and models based on engineer markups and project feedback.
  • Help identify drafting or model inconsistencies and escalate issues to senior designers.
  • Work closely with engineers, designers, and project managers to support design deliverables.
  • Assist in maintaining drawing logs, revisions, and model versions.
  • Participate in internal design coordination meetings as needed.
  • Generate basic sketches, renderings, or visual aids to help communicate design intent.
  • Support the preparation of graphics and exhibits for proposals or client presentations.
  • Follow Orion’s drafting and modeling standards for accuracy, consistency, and presentation.
  • Assist with checking drawing sets for completeness and alignment with engineering intent.
  • Assist in creating discipline-specific 3D models using Revit, Civil 3D, or Navisworks.
  • Support senior staff in federating models and preparing coordinated model views.
  • Help import survey, point cloud, and field data into model environments.
  • Maintain project folders, naming conventions, and data organization.
  • Assist in updating CAD and Revit families, templates, and title blocks.
  • Support senior staff in running basic clash detection workflows in Navisworks.
  • Document clash reports and track resolutions with guidance.
  • Help prepare simple shop drawings, lift diagrams, or phasing views derived from 3D models.
  • Assist in updating as-built models using survey or field information.
  • Actively participate in training, mentorship, and skill-building sessions.
  • Demonstrate eagerness to learn marine structural systems and digital modeling workflows.
  • Support team collaboration by communicating clearly and asking questions proactively.
