About The Position

We are currently seeking a Junior Open-Source Research Specialist (Night Shift) to join our team in Arlington, VA in support of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security. Diplomatic Security is the federal law enforcement and security bureau of the U.S. Department of State tasked with securing diplomacy and protecting the integrity of U.S. travel documents.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree and less than one (1) year of experience or three (3) years of experience with no degree. Experience includes conducting open source and academic research, all-source intelligence and targeting.
  • Knowledge of media platforms in the designated region, in particular those aligned with cultural, political and security interests as they relate to the U.S. interests in order to conduct complex open and all-source source operations focused on a wide range of DS monitoring priorities that may include threats, political violence, crime, terrorism and other critical security priorities for internal and external customers.
  • Knowledge of open-source concepts, methods, and practices to provide technical and analytical support for the planning, conduct, and coordination of intelligence research and analysis operations.
  • Knowledge of various qualitative and quantitative techniques to effectively locate and identify information of concern regarding Department equities in publicly available information including social, news, and traditional media.
  • Knowledge of Internet-based research, including Boolean logic, search engine and database resources, and Internet sources, such as social media, social networking tools, data exploitation, and commercial- and industry-based database to conduct complex open-source operations focused on a wide range of DS monitoring priorities that may include threats, political violence, crime, terrorism, and other critical security priorities for internal and external customers.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must have and be capable of maintaining a U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance at the required level.

Responsibilities

  • Use Boolean logic, automated search tools, and other research skills to find information on social media, news sites, forums, and other publicly available sources that may affect protective operations.
  • Work independently based on tasking received, collaborate with other Research Specialists and Analysts on taskings, and adjust to operational feedback and requests.
  • After training, should be able to conduct open-source research, utilizing government software and hardware, to effectively research publicly available information in line with mission requirements, priorities, and standard operating procedures.
  • Must be able to communicate key information quickly, clearly, and concisely both verbally and in writing. They should be curious, motivated, collaborative, organized, and adaptable.
  • Work to continuously improve their knowledge of advanced research, the Program, social media landscape, managed attribution, behavioral threat assessment and management, and threat assessment. They must learn and apply knowledge of the Program legal authorities when conducting open-source research.
  • Collaborate with Business Analysts, Automation Engineers, and other personnel to determine processes or sub-processes that can be automated and support process and functional requirements documentation efforts in support of automation efforts.
