About The Position

HII is seeking an imaginative and adaptable Junior Mechanical Engineer that is on schedule to graduate in May 2026 to join our fast-paced, interdisciplinary teams in our Alexandria, VA location. Your role will involve: Hands-On Design & Prototyping: Applying mechanical engineering theory and methods to a diverse portfolio of projects. This includes developing solutions like electromechanical devices, motion platforms, electronics packaging, and multi-spectral signature management (visible, NIR, thermal, acoustic, RF). DFM Focus: Utilizing a basic understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) to ensure your designs are optimized for both subtractive and additive manufacturing methods. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Working directly with senior engineers, technicians, managers, and end-user clients in small, close-knit teams. Regular communication is key to maintaining a flexible and highly adaptive engineering process. System Integration: Applying a basic knowledge of electrical applications to ensure all mechanical designs are suitable for seamless product integration. Requirements

  • 0 years of experience with a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret level security clearance
  • Experience working on a project that utilized Project Management techniques and practices
  • Experience using 3-D modeling software for complex assemblies, detailed design, and realistic rendering
  • Knowledge of raw materials, prototyping and production processes, quality control and other techniques for maximizing the effective fabrication and manufacture of electro-mechanical devices

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working directly with a customer to understand and interpret needs and specifications is preferred
  • Working knowledge of current and novel technologies related to mechanical engineering design, fabrication, and testing
  • Ability to study industrial processes to determine where and how application of our products can be made
  • Active US Secret level security clearance

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to the design, development, prototype fabrication, and verification testing of unique specialty products
  • Perform detailed system and sub-system analysis, simulation, and design work as required
  • Work with complicated mechanical system concepts and detailed designs to properly determine the necessary design tradeoffs
  • Interface with project teams and external customers as required, to support specialized product development
  • Participate in the assembly, system test planning, and system test procedure generation
  • Adequately document processes, procedures, and testing using structured formats. Where formats do not currently exists, provide a recommended format for review
  • Learn and utilize the Quality Management System (QMS) and existing tools and templates
  • Interface with project teams and external customers as required, to support specialized product development
