About The Position

The journey-level gardener, under the supervision of the Landscape Superintendent, performs skilled and varied landscape gardening for the ongoing creation of a safe, engaging, environmentally responsible, and beautiful outdoor campus.

Requirements

  • High School graduation supplemented by at least two years of experience in gardening and landscape maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Knowledge of common trees, plants, plant culture, turf maintenance, and pest control maintenance and methods
  • Ability to perform mechanical maintenance on equipment
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems and ability to perform repairs and maintenance
  • Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the duties of the job including sufficient strength to lift 60 pounds
  • Must be willing to work weekends and overtime based on university needs, such as, but not limited to: Opening Weekend, Graduations, meeting project deadlines
  • Must be willing to work in all varieties of weather conditions
  • Must be willing to work in an environment where noxious plants, herbicides, and pesticides may be present
  • Must be willing to obtain a California Certified Applicator’s License if directed
  • Valid California driving license and satisfactory driving record required

Responsibilities

  • General grounds-keeping maintenance to lawns, shrubs, trees, bedding plants, hardscape exterior surfaces, and playing fields (natural and synthetic) including but not limited to mowing, pruning, dead-heading, litter abatement, and weeding
  • Responsible and safe application of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, including maintaining appropriate education levels and certifications as necessary or required
  • Use, care, and maintenance of manual and power equipment including but not limited to tractors, mowers, clippers, edgers, and blowers
  • Renewal of planted and hardscape landscape as directed including but not limited to site preparation, planting, transplanting, soil amending, and mulching
  • Safe and responsible operation of vehicles in the execution of daily duties amid a densely crowded campus to transport materials, equipment, and fellow gardeners
  • Inspection, maintenance, and repair of campus irrigation systems and replacement as directed
  • Implementation of landscape designs from plans or as directed for new spaces created as a result of construction
  • Daily exercise of observation toward outdoor campus safety, reporting trip hazards, inadequate lighting conditions, and any other safety or hazard potential
