This position requires you to maintain internet service and a mobile phone with voice and data plans to be used when required for work. Purpose This role requires journeyman-level expertise in fabricating, installing, operating, and performing routine or emergency work on equipment located in outside plant facilities. The position is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining fiber-optic and copper cable equipment in these areas. Tasks include splicing copper or fiber-optic cables, terminating connections at terminal blocks, and ensuring underground cables are properly pressurized. The position involves specialized work at the journey level within a designated area of proficiency and may include other related duties as needed.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
At least two years of experience in splicing, troubleshooting, repairing, and testing fiber optic cables.
At least four years of experience in the installation and/or repair of fiber-optic cable and other related telecommunications equipment.
Ability to distinguish the difference between colors.
Experience in installation of OSP cables and construction methods.
Industry recognized certification in splicing and testing copper and fiber optic cable.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Nice To Haves

Six or more years of experience of journey level splicing, troubleshooting, repairing and testing fiber optic and copper cable.
Over five years of experience in a campus environment.
Confined space training.
Experience with large projects, cable transfers.
Strong troubleshooting skills.

Responsibilities

Installation and splicing of copper cables.
Installation and splicing of fiber optic cables.
Testing and troubleshooting copper.
Testing and troubleshooting fiber optic cables.
Repair and maintenance of copper cables.
Repair and maintenance of fiber optic cable.
Maintenance and repair of cable air pressure.
Assist and work as a team member with other ET and construction groups.
Driving university owned vehicles to job sites will be required for this position. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy UTS157.
Perform other related functions as assigned.
