About The Position

The James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home Intern plays an integral role in the day-to-day operation of the Home, as well as working on a variety of special projects and long-term strategic goals. They create and lead tours, assist with private events and Museum programs, create social media content, catalogue the collection, and work on other initiatives as assigned. This intern will report to the Director, James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home Programming. Interning at Riley Children's Foundation offers a first-hand glimpse of how the Foundation ensures that children have access to exceptional healthcare by funding pediatric research, education and care. We at Riley Children's Foundation raise funds statewide and steward assets for the kids.

Requirements

  • Preferred Majors: Public History, American History, English, Communications, or similar majors would find this internship beneficial to their career goals and would most likely possess the skills needed to perform assigned projects and tasks.
  • Technical Skills Needed: Microsoft Office, Social Media Sites: Facebook, Instagram
  • Professional Skills Needed: Eagerness to learn. Strong public speaking. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Self-starter with time management skills. Professional demeanor. Strong research and writing ability.

Responsibilities

  • Tour Guide Learn and master material on the history of James Whitcomb Riley, 528 Lockerbie Street, and Riley Children’s Foundation.
  • Provide entertaining, informative, and well-paced tours to visitors, large groups, and grade school aged students.
  • Adapt tour content as needed based on audience
  • Content Creation Create social media posts on a variety of historic topics related to James Whitcomb Riley and 528 Lockerbie Street and help manage social media pages.
  • Help market and promote the Home as a place for tours, programming, and events.
  • Write and edit small exhibits for the Visitor Center.
  • Programs and Events Assist in the creation and management of JWR Home programs
  • Help prepare, stage, and manage large private events such as group tours, weddings, etc.
  • Catalogue the Museum Home Collection Continue cataloguing the Museum Home collection.
  • Follow the same guidelines used by previous interns to ensure the continuity of the collection catalogue.
  • Other Duties as Assigned Riley Children’s Foundation Events: Participate in Riley Children’s Foundation events as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Intern may be assigned projects from the wider Riley Children’s Foundation team. The intern manager will work to identify additional projects or shadowing opportunities that align with intern’s professional interests.
