About The Position

Lake County is accepting applications for: Jail Administrator ACCOUNTABLE TO: Lake County Commissioners and works in coordination with the elected Sheriff PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION: The Jail Administrator will take charge of the detention center and the inmates in the center, per MCA 7-32-2121. This includes overseeing daily facility operations, staff management, inmate supervision, policy implementation, and compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. The position requires strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills, and the ability to manage a secure, humane, and efficient correctional environment.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in corrections or law enforcement, including 2+ years in a supervisory or administrative role

Nice To Haves

  • Detention Officer certification is preferred, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct, and oversee the daily operations of the detention center
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate correctional staff
  • Develop and implement jail policies, procedures, and security protocols in accordance with legal requirements and best practices
  • Ensure compliance with standards set by the state Department of Corrections, NCCHC, ACA, or other oversight agencies
  • Oversee inmate intake, classification, housing, medical care, meal service, visitation, and release processes
  • Prepare and manage the jail's annual budget, including payroll, supplies, contracts, and facility maintenance
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records related to inmates, incidents, and facility operations
  • Investigate incidents and complaints involving inmates or staff; work with County HR to implement corrective actions or disciplinary measures as needed
  • Coordinate with law enforcement agencies, courts, attorneys, probation/parole, emergency medical services, mental health providers, and other external entities
  • Ensure staff are properly trained in emergency procedures, inmate rights, suicide prevention, and use of force
  • Assist in facility inspections and audits; develop corrective action plans when needed
  • Serve as liaison between the jail, county officials, and the public when necessary
  • Respond to emergency situations or critical incidents on a 24/7 basis
  • Perform other duties as assigned
