About The Position

Provides supplemental aids and services, including instruction in Braille and orientation and mobility, to enable students with visual disabilities to progress in the general curriculum and advance appropriately toward attaining annual IEP goals.

Requirements

  • Ohio Certification/Licensure in the Education of Students with Vision Impairments
  • Training and experience in teaching students with Vision Impairments and working effectively with educators and families.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Current driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Knowledge of: Southern Ohio Educational Service Center policies and regulations, names of district superintendents, district contact persons and staff, public relations, State and Federal Rules and Regulations, Vision Improvement, and Braille instruction.
  • Ability to: Assess, consult, problem solve and develop interventions, interpret policies, procedures, and regulations; follow instructions; communicate effectively; maintain files and records; collect data; prepare required reports; demonstrate a positive relationship with staff; promote a favorable image in the best interests of the Regional Center; accept and request assistance when situations warrant; work effectively with Team Leader and other staff in prioritizing work; provide Braille instruction; will consult with orientation and mobility services personnel to support orientation and mobility goals; move/lift eighty (80) pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Provides instruction and consultation services to students with visual impairments in general and regular education settings, including Braille instruction and orientation and mobility instruction.
  • Provides consultation to district staff and families regarding students with vision impairments.
  • Attends IEP meetings for students with vision impairments upon district request and assists with IEP development.
  • Identifies, procures, and coordinates appropriate supplemental special education services to maintain the student with visual impairments in the regular classroom.
  • Selects and develops instructional materials and equipment required for students with visual impairments and assists teachers in modifying the classroom environment.
  • Serves as a liaison between district staff and other agencies to obtain appropriate instructional materials and equipment for students with vision impairments.
  • Provides in-service to school personnel, families, and members of the community regarding the education of students with vision impairments.
  • Serves as a resource to center staff on issues related to the education of students withvision impairments.
  • Conducts comprehensive assessments of students suspected of having vision impairments, and participates in Evaluation Team meetings upon the district's request.
  • Evaluates student progress on an ongoing basis with written progress reports as often as required and/or requested.
  • Keeps abreast of techniques and innovations in the assigned position via attendance at pertinent training, professional reading, and other professional development activities, and develops an Individual Professional Development Plan if required by position.
  • Assists in identifying and prioritizing annual budget needs.
  • Operates within the assigned budget and utilizes Center requisition procedures to obtain needed supplies and materials.
  • Demonstrates initiative, a high degree of professional commitment, and works independently in meeting the responsibilities of the job and job-related activities.
  • Responds constructively to supervision by assuming responsibilities for improvement.
  • Participates in all Team, SOESC, and Center meetings and activities as required by the position to accomplish Team and agency goals.
  • Maintains communication with other Center personnel, including other Team members, district personnel, families, and students.
  • Works cooperatively with Center staff to complete mutually assigned tasks, as determined by the Team, Team Leader, and/or Director.
  • Manages time to complete duties and implements strategies to address competing work priorities.
  • Maintains records, collects outcome and consumer satisfaction data, and submits reports that meet the requirements of the job.
  • Provides information as required by position (e.g., computerized caseload lists, EMIS, Medicaid, grant applications, project applications, inventory data entry, mailing lists, professional development, etc.)
  • Develops and follows an accurate schedule of services to schools, students, and families, and demonstrates regular work attendance to fulfill job responsibilities.
  • Follows Center procedures for posting accurate weekly schedules, signing in/out of work sites, wearing identification badges, requesting/reporting leave, completing mileage reimbursement requests, and completing work calendars/time sheets when appropriate.
  • Completes reports and other documents, as needed, which clearly and concisely communicate information, using correct writing conventions.
  • Comprehension of Google Suite applications.
  • Safeguards the confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Interprets Region 14 programs and services accurately and helpfully for school personnel, families, and the public.
  • Demonstrates a helpful, positive attitude with coworkers, families, students, and district personnel and maintains appropriate, courteous language in all work settings.
  • Presents a personal appearance that is appropriate for professional responsibilities and is within the role expectations of client groups.
  • Maintains a neat working area and assists others in appropriate housekeeping efforts throughout the Center.
  • Follows agency regulations to resolve conflicts with other staff.
  • Problem solves and/or notifies appropriate personnel regarding equipment and supply needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs all duties in conformity with the adopted Vision and Mission statements.
  • Fully understands and abides by the Ohio Revised Codes regulations for reporting child abuse and/or neglect.
