About The Position

Auto-Owners Insurance, a top-rated insurance carrier, is seeking a motivated intern to join our IT Division as an IT Security Engineer for the summer. This position is part of the IT Security department and is responsible for reducing IT Security risk and responding to incidents for the company and its affiliates. This internship has full-time hours (Monday through Friday) and is in person in Lansing, Michigan. Interns choose their start and end dates. Most join in mid-May and stay until mid-August.

Requirements

  • Students must be working toward a bachelor’s degree in IT Security, Information Assurance, Information Security & Intelligence, or similar major is required, having at least two years of coursework completed.
  • Exhibit good initiative and motivation.
  • Ability to effectively share the knowledge of current cybersecurity threats and their relevancy to the Company and its affiliates, with other team members.
  • Ability to learn about several of the following areas: security engineering, server security, network security, cloud security, authentication methods, encryption protocols, and application security.
  • Ability to learn and effectively use the security tools and security development techniques as practiced, acquired, or adopted within the Division.
  • Ability to work with details, analyze information, logically solve problems, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to document concepts and skills learned for later reference.
  • Ability to actively participate in meetings.
  • Please note that the ability to work in the U.S. without current or future sponsorship is a requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Cultivating an environment of IT security compliance by enforcing corporate policies and facilitating corporate compliance with external regulatory requirements, technical standards, and best business practices in an effort to uphold confidentiality, integrity, and availability of our infrastructure.
  • Escalating incidents and alerts to vendors, team members, leadership, or other internal teams as needed.
  • Performing the following roles for at least one security product/application: administer, upgrade, and troubleshoot.
  • Providing status updates to leadership or other team members.
  • Researching, recommending, developing, maintaining, and supporting security software tools and policies for mitigation control.
  • Investigating security incidents.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.
