About The Position

Join HII – Mission Technologies and make a difference by playing a vital role within our IT Project Management Office (PMO) team. The IT PMO Sumer Intern will support a dynamic PMO that is actively undergoing an agile transformation and maturing its project management lifecycle processes. This internship offers hands-on exposure to enterprise IT initiatives and provides an opportunity to work closely with project managers, project teams, and cross-functional technology teams. The intern will assist with improving project governance, documentation, reporting, and delivery practices while gaining real-world experience in how large-scale IT organizations plan, execute, and deliver strategic initiatives. The IT PMO Internship is a temporary position within HII – Mission Technologies which prepares a college student for entry into the workforce by providing emphasis on training and gathering experience related to a student's educational discipline and which is applicable to the business needs of the company. The position is for college students who are rising sophomores or juniors in their academic program. This position prepares our interns for advanced information technology positions through challenging assignments and allows them to develop their skills within the different areas of IT Project Management. This opportunity will be on site in our Fair Lakes, VA offices.

Requirements

  • Must currently be enrolled as a student in an accredited public or private college or university and have more than 20% of required college credits completed.
  • Must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA while participating in this internship.
  • Strong interest in project management, agile concepts, strategy, or IT governance.
  • Diligent, hardworking and self-starting with the demonstrated ability to learn new concepts quickly.
  • Detail oriented and demonstrated strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent writing, communication and listening skills.
  • Desire to gain professional experience and eager to learn.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference for Information Systems and Project Management degrees.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in supporting projects across the Project Management Lifecycle (intake, planning, execution, monitoring, and closeout).
  • Support agile ceremonies such as sprint planning, stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives (as appropriate).
  • Help maintain project artifacts including charters, roadmaps, schedules, RAID logs, and status reports.
  • Assist in tracking project progress, dependencies, risks, and action items.
  • Support PMO initiatives focused on process standardization, optimization, and documentation.
  • Assist in analyzing existing PMO processes and identifying opportunities for improvement aligned with agile and hybrid delivery models.
  • Help develop templates, playbooks, dashboards, and process guides.
  • Participate in lessons learned and continuous improvement activities.
  • Collaborate with and learn from a variety of IT and business teams, including: Architecture Cybersecurity Data & Analytics Enterprise Applications Governance, Risk & Compliance (GRC) IT Engineering IT Operations IT Service Management (ITSM) Strategy & Planning
  • Support coordination and communication between project teams and stakeholders
  • Assist in creating and maintaining project dashboards and reports (e.g., schedules, milestones, capacity, risks).
  • Help analyze project data to support leadership visibility and decision-making.
  • Support PMO metrics related to delivery performance, quality, and agility.
  • Exposure to agile, hybrid, and traditional project management practices.
  • Hands-on experience with PMO governance, tooling, and reporting.
  • Insight into how enterprise IT organizations align strategy, architecture, and delivery.
  • Mentorship from experienced IT project and program leaders.
