About The Position

This position manages the logistics of boat schedules, arrivals, orientations, housing, and departures for students, faculty, and visitors at Shoals Marine Laboratory on Appledore Island. Responsibilities include coordinating on-island logistics such as housing, dietary needs, special requests, and medication management for minors. The role also involves supporting researchers and academic programs, providing island and facility tours, and supervising student workers in campus maintenance tasks. Additionally, the position handles visitor billing, operates the island store, and fosters an inclusive and welcoming environment. The individual may serve as supporting scientific crew aboard research vessels, lead facility and natural history tours, and assist with other operational tasks. Availability for emergency response while on duty, serving as a crew member on a commercial vessel, and operating small boats are also key responsibilities. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be eligible for employment in the United States.
  • Selected candidates must be able to successfully participate in pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • Meet the University of New Hampshire’s hiring requirements for both criminal and driving history (background checks are required).
  • Applicants must have interest in working in a remote educational environment.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work well with students, faculty and other staff members in an isolated environment.
  • Very strong organizational and logistical planning skills.
  • Strong knowledge of computer skills; proven organization skills; attention to detail along with experience managing multiple tasks.
  • Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or ability to obtain.
  • Serve as a crew member on board a commercial or an oceanographic vessel, Valid Drivers License and Safe Driving Record.
  • Must be able to work with as a team member with students, faculty and staff in an isolated and physically demanding environment involving long hours.
  • Must be willing and able to assist with moving, packing, loading and unloading of supply runs both on Appledore and on the mainland.
  • Must be able to lift and move more than 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Manage boat schedules and logistics of arrival, orientation, housing, departure of students, faculty, and other visitors.
  • Manage on island logistics including, but not limited to, housing, dietary restrictions, special requests, medication management for minors, etc.
  • Support and coordinate researchers, academic programs, and operations of SML.
  • Provide island orientation presentation to visitors.
  • Provide tours of and orientation to SML facilities.
  • Collaborate with Assistant Island Coordinator to train, supervise and assist student workers in the maintenance of the Appledore Island campus including kitchen prep/cleanup, general housekeeping, grounds work and other assigned tasks.
  • Responsible for billing visitors, visiting researchers, and non-student participants.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for students, researchers, instructors, and visitors. Implement initiatives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Serve as supporting scientific crew aboard SML’s research vessels as needed.
  • Support and conduct tours of laboratories, facilities, and natural history.
  • Operate the Appledore Island store (operating POS system, stocking, etc.).
  • Expected to be available for consultation and emergency response at all times, on days scheduled to be working, and while on SML property and vessels.
  • Serve as a crew member on board a commercial vessel, and operator of small vessels.
  • Other duties as assigned.
