Ironworker - Heavy Civil with AIS Infrastructure

The AIS Infrastructure Group consists of four heavy civil construction companies. Our services include infrastructure improvement, heavy civil construction, and site development for government and state agencies and private enterprise across the United States. We do a wide variety of heavy civil projects, including highways, bridges, and DOT work, power plants, dams and reservoirs, underground utilities, and more. Job Summary: The Ironworker is responsible for erecting, aligning, and securing structural steel components for heavy civil construction projects. This role involves working at heights, connecting and bolting steel members, and ensuring structural alignment per engineered drawings and specifications. The Ironworker must possess a strong knowledge of ironwork principles, construction processes, and adhere to AIS Infrastructure's safety standards and protocols. Fabricate and install ornamental and miscellaneous metal components such as: Handrails, guardrails, and stair systems Balconies, platforms, and ladders Gates, fencing, and security barriers Decorative and architectural metal features Read and interpret shop drawings, architectural plans, and field measurements Perform layout and field fitting to ensure proper alignment and installation Install anchor bolts, embeds, and base plates using appropriate fastening methods (epoxy, expansion anchors, welding, etc.) Perform field welding, grinding, and finishing to meet visual and structural requirements Operate tools such as grinders, saws, drills, levels, lasers, and welding equipment Ensure installed work meets tolerances, elevations, and aesthetic standards Coordinate with general contractors, finish trades, and project teams Maintain a clean and organized work area, especially in finished or occupied spaces Follow OSHA safety standards, including PPE and jobsite specific requirements

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as an Ornamental Ironworker or Miscellaneous Metals Installer
  • Proven experience in heavy civil or infrastructure projects (bridges, DOT work preferred)
  • Strong ability to read and interpret shop drawings and fabrication details
  • Experience with layout, field measurement, and custom fitting
  • Proficiency in welding (MIG, TIG, Stick depending on application)
  • Understanding of installation methods for anchors and embeds
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision on finish work
  • Experience with stainless steel, aluminum, or specialty metals
  • TIG welding experience for high-visibility finishes
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle heavy materials and tools (50+ lbs)
  • Work in all weather conditions and high-noise environments
  • Strong balance, coordination, and spatial awareness
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and perform detailed work for extended periods
  • Comfortable working at heights using lifts, scaffolding, or ladders
  • Precision layout and installation
  • Welding and metal finishing
  • Blueprint and shop drawing interpretation
  • Attention to detail and craftsmanship
  • Problem-solving for field fit-up issues
  • Communication and coordination with other trades

Nice To Haves

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
  • Welding certifications (AWS D1.1 or D1.6) – preferred but not required
  • Aerial lift, scissor lift, forklift certifications preferred but not required
