About The Position

Under the direction of the Farm Center Interpretive Supervisor, this position will learn best practices in animal care by caring for and assisting with the management of farm livestock, cropping systems, trail work, gardening, and invasive species removal depending on location. This position may also assist with and present public programs, learn front-line registration processes, and interact with visitors. This position performs a variety of professional and technical duties related to interpretive programs and the operation of an educational Farm Center. To qualify for a college internship: a. Students must be enrolled as a student in an accredited college or university and provide proof of enrollment upon hire. b. Students who are not currently enrolled in school due to summer break must provide proof of continued future enrollment (e.g. enrollment in the fall will qualify). c. Students must perform work that is related to their formal academic program. d. College interns must provide the company with all the guidelines required by their educational institution.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in a college or university with a concentration in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, environmental education, biology or natural resources management, or a related field.
  • A strong commitment to animal care and management, interpretation, conservation, and the environment.
  • Must maintain a valid Michigan driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • May be required to adjust schedule to meet organizational needs, including special events, evenings, weekends & holidays.
  • Ability to perform essential duties.

Responsibilities

  • Observe and conduct interpretive presentations to students, families, summer camps, and the general public.
  • Perform farm maintenance duties.
  • Assist in caring for all farm livestock.
  • Examine animals to detect diseases and injuries.
  • Prepare animals for and assist in the delivery of offspring.
  • Groom, clip and trim animals for exhibition.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough records of animal care, health and birthing.
  • Work a varied schedule, work any day of the week, including weekends and holidays, am or pm shifts, and in any type of weather.
  • Register groups and individuals for programs, prepare and send out correspondence, and arrange other school/group visit logistics.
  • Welcome and interact with park visitors, addressing inquiries in person, by phone, or through email.
  • Maintenance of indoor facilities and outdoor spaces, including captive animal and trail maintenance, as needed.
  • May assist with special events.

Benefits

  • Eligible part-time employees will receive up to a $5.75 per hour retention bonus for all hours worked from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
