About The Position

Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Science in Foods and Nutrition or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and active IBCLC Certification (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) issued by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. One year professional experience preferred. Applicants must also possess a CPR (BLS Provider) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross. Certification may be obtained prior to orientation. Valid California Driver’s License with a safe driving record, DMV record required. Must be insurable by the program’s insurance carrier. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and perform all duties required of the IBCLC position. Must be able to type at least 30 wpm. Extensive travel is required. The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant is an essential role within the Riverside San Bernardino County Indian Health, Inc. The IBCLC supports eligible WIC clients in obtaining comprehensive breastfeeding and health maintenance services. This position provides education, counseling, and referrals for preventive, diagnostic, curative, and restorative health services, ensuring culturally sensitive and individualized breastfeeding support for clients, families, and the community. Must be able to work with the Indian Community, and be sensitive to the Indian culture and its needs.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Participates as member of the Riverside-San Bernardino County Indian Health, Inc. health care team in helping eligible WIC clients obtain health maintenance services including providing services and referrals for preventive, diagnostic, curative, and restorative health services available to the client, group, or community in the area of breastfeeding.
  • Apply established and planned breastfeeding education and counseling principles to the need of both individuals and groups.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times
  • Maintains complete, accurate and timely records of participant visits.
  • Observes clients’ breastfeeding technique to aid in correct positioning for infant and mother.
  • Helps breastfeeding others problem solve and avoid future breastfeeding problems.
  • Aid in client’s success in accomplishing longevity of breastfeeding success
  • Provide client’s with breastfeeding aids that help to make the breastfeeding experience easier and more convenient on the mother and infant.
  • Visits homes of WIC clients after delivery of their infant to ensure proper breastfeeding technique.
  • Creates a list of all prenatal moms and mothers of infants. Makes phone contacts, clinic visits, and home contacts with these clients to give breastfeeding education and assistance.
  • Accepts referrals for consults for breastfeeding education and assistance for IHS patients.
  • Provides prenatal breastfeeding education classes for clients.
  • Organizes postpartum breastfeeding support groups for the different clinic site
  • Orders breastfeeding supplies and aids for clients.
  • Works with Outreach staff to get referrals of clients who need aid in breastfeeding services.
  • Participates in promoting breastfeeding at various outreach clinics and/or Health Fairs.
  • Participates in department staff meetings, attends workshops, seminars etc., for updates in the field of breastfeeding. Presents case studies for current breastfeeding challenges with clients in the communities and teaches staff solutions to these issues.
  • Demonstrates competency and works with the day-to-day operations of assigned WIC breastfeeding education staff members at various sites including staff training on current and upcoming policies and technique for breastfeeding.
  • Utilizes the ability to work harmoniously with others to accomplish the work in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Plans and facilitates Community Breastfeeding Programs on the benefits of breastfeeding.
  • Other duties as assigned, all community programs involving nutrition.
  • This position shall require working on weekends, if needed.
  • Visit all Reservations every 3 months.
  • Maintains charts and/or documents required by the position
  • Teaches classes associated with good breastfeeding practices and technique.
