About The Position

We have an exciting opportunity for a Standards Development Intern based in our Evanston, IL office. This is a hybrid opportunity. UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) is seeking a motivated and dedicated Standards Development Intern to join our team for the Summer 2026. This 3-month internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a non-profit safety standards environment, contribute to meaningful projects, and develop valuable skills in research and analysis. UL Standards & Engagement: At UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE), we expand the boundaries of safety science to create a more secure and sustainable world. For more than a century, we have created new safety standards and shared our findings with academia, scientists, manufacturers, and policymakers across industries. What you’ll learn and achieve: As the Standards Development Intern you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you: Assist with standards and engagement projects related to industry mission and goals. This may involve document review, data collection, data analysis, and synthesizing information from various sources. Support standards development activities by organizing and maintaining standards project documentation (drafts, proposals, meeting minutes, action-item registers, and decision logs). Assist with comment and ballot workflow including tracking submissions, categorizing themes, monitoring due dates, and supporting publishing packages. Conduct targeted research from internal sources and public references (literature, incident summaries where available, regulatory updates, peer standards, and stakeholder inputs). Help collect and organize data using qualitative and quantitative research methods. Analyze data to draw meaningful insights and trends. Support in creating reports, presentations, and visualizations summarizing research findings. Prepare materials for internal and external presentations. Assist in the coordination of standards development projects, organize, and maintain project documentation, including tracking progress and ensuring tasks are completed on time. Stay current with relevant literature, trends, and developments in the field to contribute valuable insights to ongoing projects. Perform administrative duties as needed, including data entry, scheduling, and coordination of meetings. Professional education and experience requirements for the role include: Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or advanced degree program in a related field. Strong interest in the non-profit sector, public policy, research related to safety, social or environmental issues. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel (formulas, sorting/filtering; pivot tables preferred). Comfort producing structured PowerPoint presentations.
