About The Position

The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is the Metropolitan Planning Organization for the Dallas-Fort Worth region, which is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States. The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is seeking a summer Intern to provide support to the Transportation Safety Program which focuses on improving the safety of our regional transportation system by implementing programs and projects that assist in reducing the number of crashes, serious injuries, and fatalities on our regional roadways. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Basic knowledge of GIS principles and the ESRI ArcGIS platform
  • Good communication, both verbal and written, and interpersonal skills, with ability to listen to instructions, coordinate with other team members, and present ideas
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Detail oriented, highly organized, with an ability to handle multiple assignments/tasks and work well in a deadline driven environment without diminishing quality of work
  • Good analytical skills, including the ability to identify data discrepancies
  • Ability to create, maintain, and manipulate databases, maps, queries, and tables
  • Must be attending an accredited college or university in a degree-seeking program during employment
  • No work experience required
  • At least one year of school-related experience

Responsibilities

  • Working with supervisor to collect, process, maintain, and analyze regional safety data, including crash data from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Crash Records Information System, fatality data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, and hazardous material spill data from the National Response Center
  • Working with supervisor to enter and collect data and analyze activities for the Mobility Assistance Patrol Program, Traffic Incident Management Program, Wrong Way Driving Mitigation Project, and the Regional Roadway Safety Plan
  • Working with supervisor to collect and analyze regional incident management performance data
  • Assisting with regional and federal safety performance tracking and reporting requirements
  • Working with supervisor to coordinate efforts to promote transportation safety related activities and initiatives
  • Working with supervisor to compile and maintain databases and spreadsheets while ensuring data accuracy
  • Working with supervisor to create and edit maps using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Working with supervisor to compile and summarize studies, and assist with writing reports for supervisor review
  • Drafting and preparing documents such as presentations, public outreach content, and education materials for supervisor review
