About The Position

Intern -Transportation Engineering Public Works 7:00 am – 4:00 pm, may vary Ever wonder how roads go from blueprint to blacktop? What You'll Do This internship puts you alongside Transportation Engineering professionals supporting real construction and capital improvement projects across Fort Wayne. You'll gain hands-on exposure to inspection, documentation, and field operations-seeing firsthand how infrastructure projects are built, monitored, and completed. Key Responsibilities Assist with field inspections and basic testing to help ensure projects meet plans and safety standards Document project progress through photos, reports, and field notes Support pavement data tracking and updates in the Pavement Management System Attend project and pre-construction meetings to observe planning and coordination Assist engineering and survey staff with measurements, quantities, and data collection What You Bring | Education & Experience Currently pursuing a degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Surveying, or a related field Strong interest in transportation, infrastructure, or public works Willingness to work outdoors and in office settings Strong communication skills and the ability to apply basic math in real-world situations Preferred Certifications Valid Indiana Driver's License (if operating a City vehicle) Why Work for the City of Fort Wayne You won't just observe-you'll participate. Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Surveying, or a related field
  • Strong interest in transportation, infrastructure, or public works
  • Willingness to work outdoors and in office settings
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to apply basic math in real-world situations

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Indiana Driver's License (if operating a City vehicle)
