About The Position

Southern Champion Tray has been a leading provider of paperboard packaging since 1927. We provide great packaging with distinctive service to the bakery, foodservice, and custom retail markets in all 50 states and abroad. Customer service is not a slogan at SCT, it’s who we are. Many of our customers are being regulated out of plastics and foam as the Green Movement becomes solidified. Others are simply trying to adapt to an ever changing market environment. The ‘CAD Design Team’ owns the structural design of paperboard packaging and the user experience. It is our responsibility to listen, investigate, research, learn and ideate.

This will be an extremely collaborative and hands-on working environment, because we believe you learn more by doing and interacting. First we will teach you how to use a standard packaging industry CAD program and operate a CAD cutting table. Learning to cut and assemble samples for the Sales Team is the base of this internship, but once these basic skills are mastered you will be quickly brought into the design process.

You will be given real ownership over active projects, and contribute to making critical product design decisions that will affect every Southern Champion customer. As you work shoulder to shoulder with the design team of SCT, you will learn how a good designer connects the requirements of Manufacturing to accommodate the needs of Sales to make our product better each and every day.

Requirements

• Strong communication and collaboration skills are a must
• Experience with Microsoft Office
• Previous experience with CAD software (ArtiosCAD preferred)
• Passion for creating and problem solving
• Humble, hard-working, with an enthusiasm for learning
• Flexible multi-tasker able to set priorities

• Comfortable with asking questions when unsure

Responsibilities

• Assist in designing and developing new product to add to SCT stock and custom lines
• Create and assemble design samples for Sales Team to use in field
• Learn how Design bridges the complex relationships between Sales and Manufacturing
• Monitor and meet design deadlines
• Contribute ideas toward product innovation
• Work closely with design team to ensure a cohesiveness across all surrounding departments
• Other duties as assigned
