About The Position

The Safety Intern will support the Safety Department in a manufacturing environment by assisting with the development, implementation, and evaluation of workplace safety programs. This internship provides hands-on experience in occupational safety and health, regulatory compliance, and hazard prevention. The intern will work closely with the Safety Coordinator and Safety Manager to complete key safety projects, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and daily safety and fire prevention audits. This position is designed to provide practical, real-world safety experience while developing technical, analytical, and professional communication skills.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in: Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), Industrial Safety, Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related field
  • Basic knowledge or interest in workplace safety and OSHA regulations
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels
  • Willingness to learn and follow safety rules in a manufacturing environment
  • Ability to walk production areas, climb stairs, and wear required PPE

Nice To Haves

  • Completion or pursuit of OSHA 10-Hour General Industry training
  • Familiarity with manufacturing or industrial environments
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Strong writing and documentation skills

Responsibilities

  • Assist in identifying equipment requiring LOTO procedures
  • Observe equipment operation, shutdown, and energy isolation methods
  • Identify and document hazardous energy sources (electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, etc.)
  • Draft clear, standardized LOTO procedures in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147
  • Capture and organize photo documentation for procedures
  • Review procedures with maintenance, operations, and safety leadership for accuracy
  • Collaborate with supervisors and operators to observe job tasks and processes
  • Break down jobs into logical task steps
  • Identify potential hazards associated with each task
  • Recommend appropriate engineering, administrative, and PPE controls
  • Document findings using company JSA templates
  • Assist with communication and training related to completed JSAs
  • Conduct daily safety and fire prevention inspections throughout the facility
  • Identify unsafe conditions, behaviors, and fire hazards
  • Document findings and corrective actions
  • Follow up on open items to ensure timely resolution
  • Assist with tracking trends and recurring issues
  • Shadow the Safety Coordinator during safety walks, meetings, and investigations
  • Assist with safety data entry, recordkeeping, and documentation
  • Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training sessions
  • Support special safety projects as assigned
  • Comply with all company safety rules and procedures at all times
