About The Position

Life Unlimited. At Smith+Nephew we design and manufacture technology that takes the limits off living. The R&D Engineering Intern - Mechanical will consist of a robust induction plan followed by a 3-month internship in the Joint Repair Research & Development organization within the Sports Medicine Franchise at Smith+Nephew. What will you be doing? Develop/enhance your skills in solid model design, drafting, mechanical design, part fabrication, protocol development and testing while supporting active projects at the forefront of the arthroscopic tissue repair industry. Be introduced to key skills such as predictive finite element analysis, statistical analysis and fixture development while executing relevant projects within the biomechanical field. Be exposed to onsite product manufacturing, a fully capable rapid prototyping shop, result-oriented project teams, direct surgeon/cadaver lab interaction and a fast-paced, and innovative cross-functional teams which support all global new product development. Primary responsibilities include concept development, prototyping, product design, verification/validation testing including authorship of protocols and reports, and support through production scale up. Create and maintain design control related documentation such as risk and usability assessments, user needs, design Inputs, etc. Comply with requirements of design controls and other regulatory bodies. Requirements

  • Must be currently matriculated Junior, or Senior at an accredited university as an undergraduate Engineering program in Mechanical, and/or related Engineering fiel
  • Must be in excellent academic standing, with a 3.0 or above preferred
  • High learning agility and curiosity in the medical device field
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication and technical writing skills
  • Analytical approach to problem solving
  • Design experience with mechanical design software packages, SolidWorks highly preferable
  • Basic knowledge of various fabrication methods and assembly techniques
  • Basic understanding and experience with process documentation for use in fabrication and assembly

Nice To Haves

  • Previous applicable intern, co-op, part-time or apprenticeship experience is preferred
  • Knowledge of statistical methods preferred
  • Experience in the medical device field or other regulated field preferred
