About The Position

Performs entry-level professional planning work to support the City of Lake Worth Beach’s (COLWB) comprehensive plan and land development regulations. Provides input on neighborhood, site, and master plans, assists division employees with research, analysis, and report writing for planning, zoning, and preservation initiatives. Assists applicants and the general public with planning inquiries and applications. Work is performed under general supervision with limited latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment based on professional education and previous experience.

Requirements

  • College level studies in in urban or regional planning, public administration, architecture, historic preservation, or a directly related field; may be supplemented by some experience in a planning office; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience.
  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures for the preparation, production and maintenance of reports, documentation and records
  • Basic knowledge of federal, state, and local planning, zoning, and land use regulations, standards, and requirements governing the work
  • Basic knowledge of the principles, practices, methodologies, and techniques utilized in municipal zoning, planning, and land development planning
  • Basic knowledge of historic preservation
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, and Excel) and applicable department/organization specific software and ability to learn and become proficient in the use of other specialized software as may be required
  • Ability to clearly communicate and understand information in English, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to measure and perform mathematical computations applicable to the work
  • Ability to provide exceptional internal and external customer service
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities to ensure that deadlines are met
  • Ability to photograph and research planning related information and documents
  • Ability to make sound assessments and recommendations based on research
  • Ability to correctly interpret and efficiently implement all applicable policies and procedures
  • Ability to use reasoning skills that minimize duplication of efforts, including but not limited to comparing, classifying, analyzing and coordinating

  • Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule

Responsibilities

  • Researches and prepares reports, documents, and agendas for City officials and other agencies and organizations
  • Responds to planning inquiries from a variety of internal and external constituents; assists applicants in departmental area of assignment
  • Assists in rezoning requests, preservation code compliance efforts, land use plan amendments and abandonment of easements
  • Assists in the preparation of graphic materials including, but not limited to, forms, maps, brochures, flyers and presentations
  • Performs fieldwork and research in support of current preservation and comprehensive planning efforts
  • Collects and analyzes data, conducts site visits, and assists higher level employees with projects as requested
  • Assists in reviewing and making recommendations for building permit applications and occupational licenses
  • Assists with minor planned development amendments
  • May operate independently on simple/basic zoning matters
  • Assists with Land File Maintenance
  • Reviews and approves Business Tax Receipts and Use and Occupancy Certificates
