About The Position

The Mechanical Engineering Intern will be part of the Mechanical Systems Engineering team and support a variety of hardware design, packaging, and robotic system projects. This role offers exposure to real‑world engineering challenges in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment while building foundational skills in mechanical design, prototyping, and hardware validation.

Requirements

  • Education: Currently pursuing a BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Location: Ability to work on‑site in the Beverly, MA area.
  • Soft Skills: Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and a "problem-solver" mindset.
  • Technical Knowledge: Basic knowledge of mechanical design principles, materials science, statics, and manufacturing processes.
  • Software Proficiency: Experience with 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, NX, or Creo) and working knowledge of MATLAB or Excel for data analysis.
  • Technical Literacy: Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, including a basic understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
  • Calculations: Ability to perform basic engineering calculations (e.g., stress, strain, torque, and tolerances).
  • Communication: Strong teamwork and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Adaptability: Self‑motivated with the ability to operate in a dynamic, fast‑paced, team‑oriented environment.
  • Hands-on Aptitude: Willingness to perform hands‑on laboratory work, use basic hand tools, and lift items greater than 30 lbs as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Support Mechanical Design: Assist in the design and development of new and existing mechanical components for ion implantation and robotic handling systems.
  • CAD Modeling & Drafting: Create and modify 3D models and 2D technical drawings using industry-standard design tools.
  • Testing & Validation: Perform mechanical testing, hardware validation, and data collection to ensure components meet performance and durability standards.
  • Prototyping: Assist in the assembly, troubleshooting, and refinement of mechanical prototypes in a laboratory or shop environment.
  • Documentation: Maintain organized data logs and document test results, design changes, and assembly procedures.
  • Engineering Standards: Apply mechanical engineering standards, tolerances, and best practices throughout the product development lifecycle.
