Learning Outcomes: The Engineering Intern will develop skills in the design, testing, and assembly of medical device mechanical components and systems. They will be exposed to CAD design, performance testing, preparation of risk management documentation, component assembly and report preparation activities. The goal of this internship is to come away with a deeper understanding of the medical device engineering industry and the research and development process. They will work with a cross-functional team of engineers and technicians in a fast-paced, hands on environment to design, fabricate and test medical device prototypes.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 full academic years of education in an engineering curriculum, Mechanical Engineering, or similar.
  • Advanced proficiency with CAD tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion 360, etc.
  • Familiarity in MS Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude with a hands-on approach and willingness to learn new skills.
  • Must exhibit adaptability, flexibility and strong problem solving skills.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a fast-paced, highly collaborative, hands on environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Minitab or similar analysis software a plus
  • Exposure to a machine shop environment including manual milling machine, lathe, drill press etc.
  • Experience with the programming and use of CNC equipment.
  • Experience with force testing equipment (Instron or similar).

Responsibilities

  • Support R&D Engineers in research and development of endoscopic vessel harvesting devices.
  • Participate in design & development activities, collaborating with engineers on mechanical components and systems.
  • Use SolidWorks to assist in engineering design activities.
  • Assist in the design and assembly of test fixtures, in both wet lab and bench-top environments.
  • Participate in risk management activities, such as the preparation of hazard analysis documentation, design failure mode effects analyses (DFMEAs), and risk mitigation documentation.
  • Assist with the planning, execution, and reporting of component and systems testing.
  • Attend engineering meetings and design reviews.
