Our Northern California offices (Oakland or San Jose) are seeking an Intern within their Mechanical and Fire Protection Engineering department. As a Mechanical and Fire Protection Engineering Intern at HNTB, you will support the design and development of mechanical and fire protection systems for complex infrastructure projects. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and multidisciplinary teams to help deliver safe, efficient, and sustainable solutions across transportation and architectural environments. You’ll contribute to the design and layout of HVAC, plumbing, and fire suppression systems for public transit and aviation facilities. The role also involves supporting flow analysis and fire/smoke mitigation strategies for highway and tunnel projects. Collaboration with cross-functional teams is key to integrating mechanical into overall project designs. This internship offers hands-on experience in real-world projects and an opportunity to develop technical skills in a dynamic, team-oriented environment. Relocation and housing assistance is NOT provided for this position.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent plus current enrollment in an accredited post-secondary engineering program
  • Interest and basic understanding in HVAC and plumbing/piping/pumping systems
  • Shows proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Accepts and applies direction from peers and supervisors.
  • Ability to perform basic engineering calculations
  • Ability to organize information for use in reports or other documents

Nice To Haves

  • Pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Completion of 2 years of post-secondary engineering program
  • Strong interest in transportation and infrastructure
  • Familiarity with CAD tools: MicroStation, Revit, or AutoCAD

Responsibilities

  • Assists engineer teams in various tasks and duties.
  • Assists Engineer with research, development and design of projects.
  • Assists Engineer with the preparation of engineering drawings and documents as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
