About The Position

The Fitness & Wellness Intern will support the design, management, and evaluation of recreational fitness, wellness, youth camp, and urban adventure programs at Cleveland State University. The internship is designed as a hands-on learning experience for students interested in recreational programming, wellness initiatives, and event coordination. The intern will assist with daily program operations while developing professional skills in program coordination, event planning, customer service, budgeting, assessment, and leadership. The position intentionally balances operational support with mentorship, reflection, and goal-setting to support the intern’s career development. This position will work on-site at Cleveland State University. Requirements

  • Current enrollment at Cleveland State University or a nearby institution
  • Interest in recreation, wellness, health promotion, or related field
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends as programs may require
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a professional team that collaborates effectively with colleagues.
  • Ability to contribute effectively in an environment that values entrepreneurial spirit, high expectations, accountability, and balanced lifestyles.
  • 20-30 hours/week

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in recreation, fitness, camps, customer service, or event programming
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Interest in leadership, program management, or higher education careers

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Coordinator, Recreation Programming with the day-to-day operations of fitness and wellness programs
  • Support daily program logistics including scheduling, participation, and communications with instructors as needed
  • Assist with gear rental operations and equipment organization for urban adventure
  • Help with preparation and breakdown for programs, events, and workshops
  • Support youth camp operations such as scheduling, registration, daily logistics and customer service
  • Observe and support staff supervision practices in a camp setting
  • Assist with inventory tracking and basic maintenance checks of fitness and adventure equipment
  • Assist with marketing and promotion of programs through tabling, flyers, digital content, and outreach
  • Assist with collecting participation data, satisfaction surveys, and program feedback
  • Gain exposure to budgeting concepts including revenue tracking and expense monitoring
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities
  • Assist with onboarding and training materials for student staff when appropriate
  • Engage in regular check-ins and reflective conversations with the supervisor to assess progress toward goals
  • Evening/Weekend work responsibility as required
  • Work toward any desired certifications
  • Teach classes as needed or desired depending on certifications
  • Other duties as required
