Your Opportunity We are seeking an intern to support our team of professionals in Madison, Wisconsin. The role of the intern will be to assist our project teams with wetland delineations, natural and cultural resource permitting, wildlife surveys, plant surveys, ecosystem restoration, erosion control and construction oversight and other opportunities as needed. The candidate will work closely with project managers, staff scientists and senior scientists to support delivery of environmental studies for projects involving electric transmission lines, natural gas pipelines, wind and solar electric generation facilities, wetland and stream restorations and other projects for private, municipal, state, and federal clients. While this position will support a wide range of environmental services, there will be opportunities for focused involvement in cultural resource investigations including archaeological and architectural history field surveys and background research. This is a full-time (40+-hour work week) position expected to run for 10-15 weeks, starting in May of 2026. Stantec will be responsible for training and travel expenses. This position will initially include working in Wisconsin and various locations throughout the Midwest.

Requirements

  • In progress towards earning a bachelor’s degree in an environmental or related discipline (botany, biology, ecology, natural resources, wildlife biology, anthropology, or other related field) with relevant coursework.
  • Willingness to travel and conduct fieldwork in potentially remote areas for extended periods including overnight travel. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
  • Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day and to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • A positive attitude in strenuous working conditions.
  • Experience at working well both in a team atmosphere and independently.
  • Interest in collaborating with a diversity of project managers and other scientists.
  • A willingness to learn on the job, problem-solving skills, and flexible nature.
  • Strong skills analyzing scientific literature, analyzing data, and incorporating both into reports.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Conscientious, organized, and disciplined behavior.
  • Good driving record and valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of cultural resources in Wisconsin including archaeological sites, historic properties, and other resources, in addition to applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Working understanding of Stantec’s policies and procedures for Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE), including client-specific training (as required).

Responsibilities

  • Aid in the completion of fieldwork, assessments, and reports under instruction from senior scientists.
  • Compile and manage field data to be used in project analysis.
  • Undertake as-needed field work, including cultural resource surveys, wetland delineation, wildlife surveys, and other field reconnaissance.
  • Coordinate with senior level staff and/or multidisciplinary team members to ensure that the project's needs are met in a timely and effective manner.
  • Follow established safety standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure safety of yourself and your teams while completing assignments.
