Job Description: Microchip’s Frequency and Time Systems (FTS) business unit is a world leader in precise time solutions and sets the world's standard for time. FTS generates, distributes, and applies precise time for the communications, aerospace/defense, IT infrastructure, and metrology industries. Our Government Systems group in Boulder, CO, is seeking an Engineering Intern for the summer of 2026 to contribute to Research and Development (R&D) programs in the field of precise time, frequency, and synchronization systems. This position is a good fit for someone who enjoys technical achievement, cooperative research, never-ending chances to learn, and a friendly team environment. You will lead and implement an engineering design project, receiving direct guidance and mentoring from a seasoned engineer. The assigned project will be tailored to the candidate’s experience, interests, and field of study. This opportunity requires the candidate to be a self-motivated person who is proactive and goal oriented. Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate student pursuing your Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Applied Math, or similar field of study from an accredited university
  • Proficiency in designing, developing and debugging embedded hardware and software systems
  • Familiarity with electronic components, FPGA’s, microprocessors, solid state memory, and logic devices
  • Knowledge of common interfaces and protocols (e.g. I2C, SPI, UART, USB)
  • Experience using digital test equipment (e.g. oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and multi-meters)
  • Ability to work 40 hours a week during the summer at our office in Boulder, CO
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • US Citizenship - ITAR Site

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with precise timing applications and Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) systems
  • Experience with simulation, data processing, and analysis using Python and/or MATLAB
  • System administration skills in UNIX and experience with Jenkins software installations
  • Proficiency with PCB ECAD design software (PADS or Altium preferred)
  • Deep understanding of electronics and electronic circuit fundamentals
  • Ability to understand, analyze, and design circuits at the schematic level

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of new product specifications and the selection, analysis, and evaluation of new parts
  • Engineer embedded systems and algorithms for precise time, frequency, position, and radiofrequency communications applications
  • Develop automation scripts and processes to improve engineering efficiency
  • Collaborate with Systems, Hardware, Software, FPGA, and Mechanical Engineers to develop solutions that meet or exceed customers’ requirements
  • Define script and code requirements with the Software Team and develop, implement, and test Python scripts and C++ code
  • Create, analyze, and support electronic circuit designs including PCB’s and PCBA’s
