About The Position

This position participates in the engineering design, analysis, and professional development program at Orion Engineering. College-level individuals in this program are exposed to and gain hands-on experience supporting engineering teams involved in the planning, design, analysis, and execution of marine and heavy civil infrastructure projects. Areas of exposure may include structural and geotechnical engineering support, data collection and analysis, preparation of drawings and calculations, design reviews, field observations, and coordination with project management and construction teams. This internship is intended to provide practical engineering experience while supporting the intern’s academic development and long-term career growth within the engineering profession. Requirements

  • Individuals in this position must be currently enrolled in and have completed at least one (1) year of coursework in a Civil Engineering program (structural or geotechnical emphasis preferred) or a closely related engineering discipline that leads to a B.S. degree at an accredited college or university.
  • The incumbent must have the ability to quickly learn technical concepts; communicate effectively; and interface well with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • The Company expects and requires the incumbent and all employees to observe and fulfill all safety responsibilities and actively work toward maintaining a safe workplace. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
  • The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
  • The individual must be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when required to work or visit job sites. This may include hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, personal flotation devices, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location.
  • The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by Safety or management personnel. Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency situation arise.
  • Walking, standing, or moving around active job sites as required.
  • Climbing stairs or ladders and navigating uneven terrain when visiting project sites.
  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions for limited durations.
  • Lifting and carrying objects up to 25 lbs. as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Completed or ongoing coursework in Structural Analysis, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Construction Materials, Engineering Graphics, Surveying, and/or Project Management is desired.
  • Prior internship or work experience related to engineering, construction, or marine infrastructure is preferred but not required.
  • Basic familiarity or exposure to engineering software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, SAP2000, STAAD, Excel, or similar engineering and analytical tools is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Works under the supervision of licensed Professional Engineers and senior engineering staff to support ongoing engineering and design projects.
  • Assists with collecting data, reviewing drawings, specifications, and design criteria.
  • Performs basic engineering calculations and analysis using prescribed techniques and established engineering standards.
  • Assists in the preparation of drawings, sketches, exhibits, and other engineering deliverables.
  • Supports engineers in evaluating existing waterfront and marine structures and developing repair or upgrade concepts.
  • Observes construction activities to better understand constructability, sequencing, and best design applications.
  • May assist with basic survey activities, field measurements, and site observations as required.
  • Learns how engineering disciplines interface with project management, construction operations, and field personnel.
  • Works primarily in the engineering office environment with limited field exposure as assigned.
  • Interfaces with Engineers, Project Managers, Designers, and other project team members.
  • Learns how engineering deliverables support successful project execution and closeout.
  • Assists with document control, technical documentation, and organization of project files.
  • Learns professional communication, teamwork, and engineering best practices in a consulting and construction-support environment.
  • Responsible and accountable for incumbent’s own personal safety.
  • Responsible and accountable for the safety of all co-workers and any others incumbent comes in contact with.
  • Authorized and obligated to stop work on any task or series of tasks whenever an unsafe condition or situation is anticipated or is observed.
  • Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, and Company policies and procedures and is subject to appropriate disciplinary action (including dismissal) for failure to do so.
  • Reports any and all violations of applicable laws, regulations, or Company policies and procedures promptly.
  • Performs other related administrative and technical duties as may be assigned or requested by immediate supervision (such as certification training, safety training, procedure review, etc.).
