Intern CHIE (Clinical Health Information Exchange)

UHINSalt Lake City, UT
Hybrid

About The Position

The UHIN CHIE (Clinical Health Information Exchange) facilitates the secure exchange of clinical data across disparate healthcare systems to improve patient treatment and care coordination across the continuum of care. Interoperability is at the core of what we do and drives our efforts to standardize and integrate data across multiple exchange formats We are looking for a detail-oriented Biomedical or Health Informatics (or equivalent training in health information technology) Intern to join our clinical data team. In this role, you will be at the front lines of healthcare digital transformation, helping bridge the gap between complex clinical workflows and technical data exchange standards. Your primary focus will be defining the "blueprints" that allow hospitals and healthcare providers to seamlessly share patient data with our systems. Interoperability is the backbone of modern medicine. By creating clear specifications, you are ensuring that a doctor in one facility has the information they need from another facility to make a life-saving decision. Note: This is a technical role that requires a blend of clinical curiosity and engineering discipline.

Requirements

  • In a graduate program (Master’s or Doctoral) in biomedical or informatics or equivalent training in health information technology.
  • Training in HL7, FHIR, and CCD standards.
  • Working understanding of healthcare data standards (HL7 v2, CCD/C-CDA, or FHIR), their specifications and implementation guides on the HL7.org website.
  • Ability to read and understand XML and JSON structures.
  • A "big picture" understanding of how data flows within a hospital (from the EHR to the lab or pharmacy).
  • Knowledge of coding systems (e.g., LOINC, SNOWMED, RxNorm, ICD, CPT, etc.)
  • Extremely detail oriented
  • Able to take complex topics and document them in a clear and straightforward manner.
  • Basic understanding of data modeling, data mapping, or data transformation concepts

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience working with healthcare data formats such as HL7 v2 messages, FHIR resources, or C-CDA (CCD) documents
  • Experience with data mapping, data transformation, or ETL processes involving structured or clinical data
  • Exposure to working with electronic health records (EHRs), health information exchanges (HIEs), or clinical data repositories
  • Experience using tools such as API clients (e.g., Postman), or FHIR servers (e.g., HAPI FHIR)
  • Prior academic, internship, or research work involving healthcare data integration, interoperability, or data quality

Responsibilities

  • Specification Development: Create a canonical data model for the CHIE and draft technical implementation guides by documenting data specifications for various exchange formats:
  • HL7 v2: Document required HL7 v2 message types, segments, fields, and local usage constraints for ADT and ORU submissions.
  • C-CDA (CCDs): Map clinical summary content to CCD templates.
  • FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources): Map required data elements to relevant FHIR resources and profiles, and document any CHIE-specific constraints
  • Define validation rules and conformance criteria for HL7 v2 messages, FHIR resources, and CCD documents
  • Data Mapping: Develop a data mapping framework to align incoming HL7 v2 segments, FHIR resources, and CCD sections to the United States Core Data for Interoperability (USCDI) requirements.
  • Terminology Mapping: Translate local hospital codes (local lab strings) into standard terminologies like LOINC, SNOMED CT, and RxNorm.
  • Compare specifications against current USCDI: align specifications with current USCDI data standards and requirements.
  • Stay current with evolving interoperability standards, including updates to FHIR, USCDI, and ONC regulations.

Benefits

  • Fully stocked break room free of charge, employee weekly lunch
  • Flexible/Hybrid schedule (collaboration days onsite come Mondays and Tuesdays and then remote)
  • Welcome you into one of the best company cultures!
