About The Position

Responsible for learning and assisting Channel Infrastructure Team with Houston Ship Channel (HSC) and Port hydrographic surveys, dredging projects, marine regulatory program, and completing any other assigned projects.

Requirements

  • Students must be currently enrolled in and have already completed two semesters in an undergraduate or graduate degree program
  • 2027/2028 graduation status preferred (junior/senior level)
  • May 2026 graduates are not eligible
  • Students must either attend a Houston area college/university or have a permanent residence within a commutable distance
  • Students must be in good academic standing to apply for an internship; a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7 is preferred
  • Students may not be related to any current Port of Houston Authority employee
  • Students must be able to work throughout the established twelve-week (12) program dates
  • Demonstrate strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Demonstrate attention to detail
  • Strong comprehension of verbal and written communication, including ability to listen to staff and understand their expectations and requirements
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe PDF, and Outlook
  • Willingness to learn quickly
  • Punctuality is key
  • Ability to interact on a professional level

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in GIS and AutoCAD programs preferred
  • Interest in engineering, dredging, navigation, or coastal project management preferred

Responsibilities

  • Participate in topographic and hydrographic survey review, processing, and collection of data
  • Assist in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), specifically with hydrographic survey and generally with various Channel Infrastructure needs
  • Assist Channel Infrastructure Team in managing Project 11 and HSC maintenance dredging projects
  • Assist with field inspections (i.e. pipeline installations, dock construction, dredging operations, dredge material placement site, etc.), as required
  • Assist, manage, and coordinate Port Authority owned dredged material placement areas for private terminals
  • Assist coordinating contracts for navigation studies, general support, construction design and management, testing, and program development
  • Assist in preparing various presentations for internal departments and external organizations
  • Database entry and development for pipelines, permits, licenses, and dredge materials
  • Assist in preparing official correspondence to applicants, external partners, and other Port Houston departments
  • Assist Team with sedimentation dashboard for predictive modeling of HSC shoaling
  • Participate in executing requests for licenses and permits issued by the Port Houston from the Port Commission
  • Assist with leasing submerged lands for barge fleeting
  • Assist with marine regulatory development permit applications
  • Assist in coordination and collaboration with external stakeholders
  • Assist in website development to improve data storage and user interface
  • Participate in Team meetings and professional development activities to enhance skills and knowledge
  • Perform other duties as assigned
