About The Position

Join the Hach Advanced Research team as an Analytical Chemistry Intern and gain hands-on experience applying nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques to real-world water and food quality analysis. This internship provides direct exposure to industrial NMR method development, from sample preparation and data acquisition to spectral analysis and validation in a regulated analytical environment. You'll work closely with experienced research chemists and application scientists in a highly collaborative, cross-functional team. This role is ideal for students enrolled in an NMR-focused chemistry or analytical science program who have hands-on experience with time domain NMR (TD-NMR) or solution-state NMR instrumentation. Candidates with research project experience involving quantitative NMR, relaxometry, or chemometrics are strongly encouraged to apply.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a BS or MS program in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or a closely related field
  • Junior or Senior standing as of Spring 2025
  • Coursework or research experience with NMR spectroscopy, including time domain NMR principles
  • Solid foundation in analytical chemistry techniques, data analysis, and laboratory safety
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced R&D environment
  • Genuine passion for analytical chemistry and the science of NMR measurement
  • Strong understanding of NMR theory, including relaxation phenomena (T1/T2) and time domain techniques
  • Self-directed and capable of working independently with minimal supervision
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and record-keeping habits
  • Collaborative team player who communicates clearly and contributes positively to group goals
  • Demonstrated work ethic and reliability in academic, research, or professional settings
  • Curiosity about industrial applications of analytical chemistry in environmental and food science

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with TD-NMR instruments (e.g., Bruker minispec, Oxford Instruments, or similar benchtop platforms)
  • Familiarity with NMR data processing software and relaxation analysis methods
  • Experience with water chemistry, food science matrices, or environmental analytical methods
  • Knowledge of chemometrics, statistical analysis, or calibration modeling for quantitative NMR
  • Participation in undergraduate research, chemistry clubs, or analytical science competitions
  • Volunteer work or community involvement demonstrating initiative, teamwork, and commitment

Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize TD-NMR methods for water quality and food composition analysis
  • Operate benchtop and high-field NMR instruments for routine and exploratory measurements
  • Prepare and characterize aqueous and food matrix samples for NMR-based analysis
  • Collect, process, and interpret NMR data and relaxation information using relevant software tools
  • Collaborate with Advanced Research team members to integrate NMR findings into broader analytical workflows
  • Document experimental protocols, results, and data in a clear and reproducible manner
  • Contribute to the validation of NMR-based analytical methods against established industry standards
  • Support cross-functional projects involving chemists, engineers, and product development staff

Benefits

  • paid time off
  • medical/dental/vision insurance
  • 401(k)
