POSITION TITLE: Intermediate Accountant-Expense (Non – LO – No Consumer Contact) JOB STATUS: Full Time/Salary DEPARTMENT: Accounting & Finance REPORTS TO: Accounting Supervisor – Management Reporting and Budget TRAVEL REQUIRED: None WORK SCHEDULE: Hybrid- 2 days in the office- 3 days remote. Pay: The expected hiring range for this position is from $66,495 to $83,115 plus additional bonus opportunity. The stated hiring range is based on experience, qualifications, and other relevant factors. Final compensation decisions will take into account a variety of considerations, including individual skills, internal equity, and organizational needs. JOB SUMMARY: The Intermediate Accountant – Expense is responsible for reviewing the expenses within the salaries, General, and Administrative (SG&A) budget across all departments, including regular reviews for alignment with budgeted amounts. This position reports to the Accounting Supervisor- Treasury and reviews procedures for SG&A expenses, meticulously documents all expenditures, and generates comprehensive reports for senior management, while offering insightful analysis on actual expenses versus budgeted amounts. The Intermediate Accountant – Expense conducts training sessions for employees to ensure understanding and compliance with SG&A policies and procedures. Responsibilities also include completing General Ledger (GL) entries and detailed account analysis, contributing to process improvements, accurately recording accrual and reclass entries, reviewing actual expenses weekly for correct GL usage, and preparing and reviewing loan origination costs for proper Accounting treatment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 2-4 years’ experience in Accounting, or related field required.
  • Experience with Excel, including its formulas and advanced features.
  • Open to receive and implement feedback.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate within a team environment.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to manage deadlines.
  • Capable of dealing with changes that can and will occur periodically.
  • Good sense of urgency and follow up.
  • Experience managing multiple and/or conflicting responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Monthly Salaries, General, and Administrative (SG&A) Reporting
  • Reviews for and reclassifies expenses that have been assigned to incorrect VMF departments and accounts.
  • Assigns cost centers for unclassified expenses and reviews general ledger accounts for proper activity.
  • Allocates expenses based on departmental usage.
  • Monitors and tracks accruals and journal entries.
  • Monitors and tracks Prepaid Expenses, working with Accounts Payable Team to verify allocations are expensed accurately.
  • Prepares and distributes various reports detailing departmental expenses, internal/external Marketing breakdown, and Miscellaneous costs for Vanderbilt leadership.
  • Responds to inquiries from VMF leadership regarding expenses and coding accuracy.
  • Compares SG&A Actuals to Budget and identifies any variances for analysis and reporting.
  • Generates journal entries for monthly accruals and accrual releases including but not limited to, team members’ expense reports, credit cards, bond billing, legal, insurance, contests, etc.
  • Assigns appropriate coding and submits monthly entry for hardware and software allocations.
  • Adjusts Prepaid Expense entries as necessary.
  • Collects anticipated year-end expenses from Vanderbilt departments and Silverton Mortgage.
  • Reviews prior year accruals for possible unaccrued items.
  • Compiles this data to create recommended accrual amounts for following year.
  • Analyzes year-over-year changes and provides detailed explanations for any fluctuations.
  • Codes and submits year-end accruals based on the obtained information.
  • Prepares a comprehensive report detailing all advertising expenses obtained during the calendar year.
  • Reviews GL monthly for prior year invoices and releases accruals accordingly.
  • Organizes and conducts meetings with Accounting Leadership and associated business departments on departmental expenses.
  • Compiles the SG&A Comparison Report, showing the incurred expenses vs. budgeted balances.
  • Collects prior year's origination expenses from numerous departments.
  • Ensures proper expense recognition in accordance with the matching principle under GAAP
  • Identifies and analyzes account fluctuations.
  • Presents quarterly review of expense accounts and fluctuations.
  • Reports significant fluctuations to leadership for business discussion.
  • Supports team with monthly forecasting and yearly budget process
  • Assists with gathering updated budget information from various business units during yearly budget season
  • Compiles various statistics and metrics monthly to be utilized during forecasting and budgeting
  • Prepares notes for monthly P&L review meetings and communication emails.
  • Schedules time to review monthly expense reports with VMF Leadership.
  • Coordinates with Silverton Accounting on current GL statuses, accruals and pending entries.
  • Ensures correct consolidation of business unit reporting with VMF and Silverton.
  • Other duties as assigned
