About The Position

The Vermont Department Of Corrections is looking for an Interim Volunteer Services Coordinator to work in South Burlington. A Volunteer Services Coordinator plans, organizes, directs and coordinates the development of volunteer resources within a state correctional facility. You will develop policies and procedures for recruiting, orienting, supervising, and supporting volunteers. The VSC also recruits, interviews, orients, trains, and assigns volunteers according to their abilities and interests and schedules activities, arranges space, and organizes special events. This position may supervise the functions of an institutional library.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree AND two (2) years or more of experience at a technical or professional level in social services, community organizations, education, or a related human resource program.
  • Two years of full-time college coursework OR an associate's degree AND four (4) years or more of experience at a technical or professional level in social services, community organizations, education, or a related human resource program.
  • High School diploma or equivalent AND six (6) years or more of experience at a technical or professional level in social services, community organizations, education, or a related human resource program.
  • Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.
  • Candidates who have any felony conviction record or who, within the past five (5) years, have been placed under supervision or sanctioned for a misdemeanor conviction must receive a waiver from the Commissioner of Corrections in order to be considered for employment.
  • In accordance with federal regulation, any person applying for employment in the Department of Corrections must provide relevant information.
  • Previous institutional employers will be contacted and required to provide information regarding substantiated incidences of sexual abuse or resignation during a pending investigation of an allegation of sexual abuse.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, evaluates, reassigns, and dismisses volunteers, as necessary.
  • Provides ongoing training and counseling to volunteers.
  • Serves as liaison with facility staff to identify client needs and interests.
  • Identifies volunteer resources to meet specialized interests. Coordinates special volunteer recognition events.
  • Promotes the use of volunteers within the facility and assists staff to optimally supervise, evaluate and support volunteers.
  • Performs community outreach to publicize the needs of the correctional facility and develops new volunteer initiatives. May develop special programs to assist inmates with the transition from incarceration to returning to the community.
  • Facilitates volunteer and inmate support groups.
  • Participates in facility and community meetings, workshops, seminars.
  • Prepares reports and schedules, devises forms, and maintains records.
  • Performs related work as required.
