About The Position

The Alabama School of Mathematics and Science (ASMS), a public residential high school serving talented students from across the state, seeks an on-site, full-time Interdisciplinary STEM Instructor to teach a full range of classes from core courses to electives in at least two of the following content areas: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Engineering. We are seeking the best fit for our students and organization and see this as an opportunity. The successful candidate will teach highly motivated high school students in an advanced college prep program. They will develop and implement a program of instruction that is consistent with state guidelines but is attentive to the needs of academically talented students. Courses at ASMS are taught at the college freshman or sophomore level or higher. Excellent state benefits package and competitive salary. Position: Interdisciplinary STEM Instructor Summary: An instructor is expected to introduce new content material to students in a manner which facilitates comprehension and retention, to help students develop critical thinking and writing skills that are essential to academic success, and to perform all functions with the goal of producing knowledgeable, responsible, open-minded and public-spirited citizens.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree
  • Teaching experience
  • Instructors are required to have a minimum of a Master’s Degree in field of study
  • Teaching experience with geographically and ethnically diverse student populations at secondary and/or higher educational level
  • Continuing professional development in the form of conferences, seminars, and workshops
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle driving record (MVR)
  • Instructors must possess strong knowledge of content, curriculum, instructional methods, materials and equipment and must constantly reassess to keep current with new developments in their field of study and in secondary and higher education as a whole
  • Instructors must be skilled and effective in oral and written communication

Responsibilities

  • Introduce new content material to students in a manner which facilitates comprehension and retention
  • Help students develop critical thinking and writing skills that are essential to academic success
  • Develop and implement a program of instruction to meet the needs of a learning community
  • Possess classroom management skills and be able to manage students outside of the classroom setting in the larger school community and during periods of travel such as field trips
  • Continually assessing student performance and providing timely feedback to students
  • Work with other school personnel to monitor the academic performance and the general well-being of student
  • Actively collaborate with other faculty members for purposes of curriculum ideas, teaching approaches, and problem-solving
  • Maintain student records and retain samples of written work for purposes of documenting student progress and abilities
  • Actively work with the school librarian to provide support services
  • Maintain and submit appropriate records and reports
  • Prepare and distribute a course syllabus for each course taught, developed in accordance with organizational guidelines
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records
  • Actively investigate outside learning resources such as guest speakers and student visits to special exhibits, museums, collections, etc. for the purpose of enhancing learning in the field of study
  • Ensure that the classroom is attractive, functional, and conducive to learning
  • Work as a member of a team and to be involved in extracurricular activities for the common good of the faculty, staff, and the student body as well as the school community as a whole
  • Participate in professional growth and development activities including faculty meetings, in-service days, and other activities as required or assigned
  • Possess strong knowledge of content, curriculum, instructional methods, materials and equipment and must constantly reassess to keep current with new developments in their field of study and in secondary and higher education as a whole
  • Be organized and prepared for classroom instruction

  • Handle academically challenged students and the ability to communicate with parents and staff to achieve the best possible results
  • Create an interactive classroom environment in which students are encouraged to participate fully by asking questions and contributing to topical discussion
  • Provide instruction in academic research via electronic sources such as the internet or web and must provide guidance in writing papers
  • Instruct students on lab safety and post nationally accepted safety standards when necessary
  • Challenge students to explore their interests and provide incentive to those who want to learn more on their own by methods such as giving reading lists, suggesting films, providing information on special events, programs and other appropriate venues
  • Take attendance in accordance with organizational guidelines and follow up with tardiness and absenteeism by meeting with the student as needed
  • Maintain a professional attitude and in general, help to promote a positive image of ASMS to the outside community
  • Write letters of recommendation for students as well as perform other professional activities when necessary
  • Actively participate in a program of faculty mentoring
  • Implement the policies and procedures of the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science
  • Maintain a neat appearance and appropriate dress
  • Enforce and comply with the policies and procedures of the ASMS Board of Directors
