About The Position

About Us: The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Valley Children’s Hospital is a highly specialized and crucial component of a larger healthcare facility. With 42 beds, it is designed to provide care for patients with high acuity needs. As part of a level 2 trauma center, our PICU is well-equipped to handle a wide range of medical and traumatic emergencies. The patient population of our PICU is diverse, reflecting the complex nature of cases we manage. Approximately 30% of patients are cardiac patients, requiring specialized care for repair of congenital heart defects. Another 30% of patients fall under the category of neuroscience, necessitating expertise in treating neurological disorders and injuries. The remaining 40% of patients are acutely ill with a wide variety of disorders. Our excellent outcomes indicate that the PICU at Valley Children’s is skilled in providing quality care for the sickest of the sick. This unit is perfect for individuals who are interested in exploring avenues to engage in critical thinking and who can work in a high intensity unit as a member of a successful team of nurses, providers, and support staff, making a difference in children’s lives. Job Summary: The Intensive Care Technician (ICT) is an unlicensed multi-skilled worker who supports patient care by performing specific nursing tasks and support functions as delegated by a licensed provider. Care provided by the ICT is supervised by a Registered Nurse. Phlebotomy is provided by the ICT under the supervision of the Department of Laboratory. Upon approval from the Director of Pharmacy, ICTs are authorized to access medication storage areas for the purpose of stocking and monitoring supplies and equipment that may be housed in the storage area, as well as stocking intravenous fluids and irrigation solutions.

Requirements

  • Individuals without a CPT license will be classified as an ICT Trainee
  • Intensive Care Technician Trainee Pay Range: $22.70 - $31.10
  • Apply for – CPT-I – Certified Phlebotomy Technician I – CDPH – California Department of Public Health and pass within six (6) months of hire or transfer into position
  • High School Diploma/G.E.D. (required)
  • Graduation from a patient care program (i.e. MA, CNA, EMT) (required)
  • One semester of an RN or LVN program (required)
  • Two years in a similar role in lieu of patient care program or nursing program requirement (required)
  • BLS - Basic Life Support - AHA - American Heart Association within 30 days of hire or transfer into position (required)
  • CPT-I - Certified Phlebotomy Technician I - CDPH - California Department of Public Health (required)
  • CPT-II - Certified Phlebotomy Technician II - CDPH - California Department of Public Health (required)

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum one (1) year Providing direct patient care
  • Minimum six (6) months Pre-hospital or emergency care and 6 months phlebotomy experience
  • Bilingual Skills Preferred.
  • Medical terminology preferred.
  • Unless already in possession of a CPT-I or CPT-II certification, must complete the 120-hour Valley Children's Hospital Phlebotomy Training program within three (3) months of their hire or transfer into position.
  • Must pass the national phlebotomy test and apply for their state phlebotomy certificate within six (6) months of hire or transfer.
