About The Position

AECOM is seeking a highly skilled Senior ITS/Traffic Design Engineer to join our New Jersey team to lead innovative transportation solutions. The Senior ITS/Traffic Engineer will be responsible for producing and modifying design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans, and specifications for complex transportation projects. In this position, you would collaborate closely with the project manager to conduct research, perform design development, and ensure successful project delivery. This role involves designing, implementing, and managing advanced traffic engineering and ITS projects that improve mobility, safety, and efficiency across transportation networks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field and 6 years of traffic signal design, ITS design and traffic engineering or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • Valid US Driver’s License

Nice To Haves

  • 10+ years of experience in traffic engineering and ITS projects
  • NJ PE license required and PTOE is plus
  • Proficiency in MicroStation highly preferred
  • Experience designing traffic signals, roadway signage, pavement markings, and intersection improvements following NJTA, NJDOT and MUTCD standards
  • Demonstrated proficiency in traffic analysis software such as Synchro, VISSIM, HCS, and CAD software and/or MicroStation
  • Familiarity with NJTA, NJDOT, MUTCD, AASHTO, and local traffic engineering standards and guidelines
  • Experience developing traffic control plans, detour plans, and transportation management strategies for public and private sector projects
  • Experience with testing and acceptance specifications for a completely verified ITS implementations
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • Participate in professional organizations/associations and attend events.
  • Must be willing to travel occasionally to the NYC office.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, design, deployment and operations of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), traffic signal systems, and connected autonomous vehicle (CAV) technologies.
  • Develop traffic engineering studies, including signal optimization, corridor analysis, and congestion management strategies.
  • Utilize knowledge of FHWA’s System Engineering process
  • Utilize knowledge of NJDOT and NJTA ITS Design Standards
  • Design traffic signals, roadway signage, pavement markings, and intersection improvements following NJTA, NJDOT and MUTCD standards.
  • Oversee integration of ITS hardware/software, traffic management centers, and emerging technologies.
  • Prepare technical reports, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Collaborate with agencies such as NJDOT, NJTA, MPOs and local municipalities on statewide and regional projects.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards (MUTCD, NTCIP, AASHTO) and applicable regulations.
  • Participate in professional organizations/associations and attend events.
  • Occasional travel to the NYC Office.
