About The Position

The Intake Technician facilitates the animal intake process, coordinates lost and found procedures, performs “Return to Owner” and transfer outcomes, issues licenses as appropriate and is responsible for carrying out humane euthanasia when necessary. Extensively uses PetPoint for record keeping. Provides customer support related to a wide variety of issues in person and on the phone. Must be available to work week-ends.

  • Must be computer literate, possess expert animal care knowledge and handling skills, and be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to become euthanasia certified and be trained in proper animal handling.

Responsibilities

  • Perform intakes of animals professionally, sensitively and in accordance with HSHV’s philosphy and standard operating procedures.
  • Provide customers with courteous, compassionate, judgement-free service. Offer alternative options/resources to those whom we cannot assist.
  • Through on the job training and use, obtain expert knowledge of PetPoint.
  • Examine all incoming animals. Administer vaccines, perform blood-draws, and administration of other medications as necessary and appropriate. Make behavioral observations. Enter appropriate information into PetPoint.
  • Trace or contact owners of animals with tags or identification. Perform “Return to Owner” outcomes, including licensing, as appropriate to municipality.
  • Safely and humanely handle and move animals throughout the shelter according to housing needs of the animal. Set animals up in safe, humane housing in accordance with HSHV policy.
  • Perform transfer outcomes as appropirate for wildlife and other animal care facilities and rescues.
  • Handle and evaluate injured wildlife in cooperation with Rescue Staff and Shelter Medicine Staff.
  • Manage HSHV’s Lost and Found Animal Reports.
  • Become euthanasia certified, and perform humane euthanasia of shelter animals and owned animals according to HSHV euthanasia policies.
  • Keep thorough and accurate records, complete all necessary paperwork, and enter appropriate information into PetPoint.
  • Be aware of and adhere to best practices regarding cage sanitation. Keep all cages in intake areas clean, following cleaning procedures and the highest standards for preventing the spread of contagious disease. In addition- keep all work areas (exam rooms and lobby) clean.
  • Work cooperatively with other Intake Technicians, coworkers in other departments as well as volunteers to ensure a smooth flow of shelter operations, and to meet the highest standards of animal care. Bring problems and concerns to Intake & BOH Manager.
  • Be aware of state and local laws/ordinances regarding stray animal holding, licensing, etc and their application as relevant to the shelter.
  • Maintain awareness of SOPs and policies established in other shelter departments and how they pertain to/ affect the Intake Department.
  • Answer phone calls and return voicemails in a timely fashion. Provide assistance and advice regarding HSHV Intake policies, wildlife, licensing, lost/found animals, etc. Refer callers with non-Intake issues to appropriate shelter department. Provide alternate resources to customers whom we cannot assist.
  • Communicate with Foster Coordinator regarding kittens in need of foster. Facilitate return of foster animals to the shelter after stay in foster home.
  • Communicate with Cruelty & Rescue (C/R) staff regarding animals showing signs of neglect or abuse.
  • Attend agency staff meetings. Read email on a daily basis and respond as appropriate.
  • Keep informed of and abide by agency policies and procedures, including training on newly developed policies/procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
