About Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach API Legal Outreach is the largest social justice legal organization focused on the Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, and immigrant communities of the Greater Bay Area and the Central Valley. A growing community-based organization founded in 1975, our mission is to provide culturally competent and linguistically appropriate direct services to the most marginalized segments of our community including low-income women, seniors, immigrants, and youth. With offices in Oakland and San Francisco, our work is focused in the areas of Gender-based Violence, Immigration and Immigrant Rights, Disability Rights, Senior Law and Elder Abuse, Anti-Human Trafficking, Youth Violence Prevention, Anti API Hate Violence, the preservation of affordable housing and small businesses, and other social justice issues. Position Overview The Intake Coordinator is a key frontline position responsible for conducting initial client intakes, managing referrals, providing information and assistance to community members, and offering clerical and legal support services. This role requires effective communication skills, the ability to work with underserved communities, and a commitment to social justice. The position is based across our Oakland and San Francisco offices, requiring coordination between both locations and various program areas. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Requirements

  • Fluency in English and at least one additional language commonly spoken by our client community (e.g., Spanish or an Asian/Pacific Islander language) to provide direct client services.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work with underserved communities.
  • Reliable, organized, detail-oriented, and capable of meeting deadlines.
  • Independent time management skills and ability to work well in a team-oriented, multicultural environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in interpreting and translating in Spanish, Cantonese, Tagalog or Mandarin.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice.
  • Experience with victims of trauma, domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent crimes.
  • Computer literacy, including familiarity with word processing and data entry software.
  • Knowledge of office administrative operations and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial client intakes through telephone screenings to determine eligibility for services and follow up via phone or email.
  • Direct completed intakes to appropriate staff members.
  • Coordinate and support the intake process for all staff, including training new staff on the intake process.
  • Provide information and referral assistance to community members.
  • Assist with coordinating, organizing and facilitating legal clinics and workshops, working closely with community members, volunteers and legal staff.
  • Offer legal and clerical support services to attorneys and staff, including translation and interpretation assistance, and maintaining client files and database systems.
  • Engage in other office administration, reception, and legal support duties as needed.
