About The Position

Insurance Risk - Principal Associate (Remote-Eligible) Capital One’s Agency Finance Team is seeking a highly analytical and proactive Insurance Risk-Principal Associate to join our team. This role is critical in ensuring that our commercial loan portfolio remains protected, compliant, and resilient. You will be responsible for interpreting complex insurance policy structures, identifying and curing coverage deficiencies, and managing high-level exception requests. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who takes complete ownership of their workflow and possesses a deep technical understanding of commercial insurance coverages as they relate to real estate lending and GSE requirements.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent certification
  • At least 3 years of experience in the insurance industry, with a focus on commercial risk, underwriting, or compliance

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Military experience
  • 4+ years of experience working with Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac (GSE) Multifamily Loans
  • Associate in Risk Management (ARM) , Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), or Certified Risk Manager (CRM) certification

Responsibilities

  • Compliance & Analysis: Review loan documentation, third party documents and investor guidelines to identify applicable insurance requirements; identify deficiencies in current policies and collaborate with agents and borrowers to resolve non-compliant items.
  • Technical Policy Review: Analyze insurance certificates, binders, full policies, and endorsements to ensure accuracy and adequacy.
  • Waiver Management: Holistically evaluate the risk associated with insurance deficiencies. Determine the feasibility of waivers and independently draft comprehensive justifications for investor approval.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Maintain a deep understanding of core coverages (General Liability, Umbrella/Excess, Property, etc.) and articulate the necessity of these coverages in protecting the underlying asset.
  • Stakeholder Coordination: Partner with internal lines of business and external stakeholders (borrowers, agents, third-party providers, and GSEs) to provide expert guidance on insurance matters.
  • Force Placement & Audit: Manage force-placed insurance processes when necessary and represent the department in both internal and external audits.
  • Process Improvement: Proactively identify opportunities to streamline workflows, increase internal controls, and improve departmental efficiency.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Analytical Rigor: The ability to assess risk beyond a basic checklist, understanding the "why" behind coverage requirements and the broader implications of a deficiency.
  • Exceptional Communication: Strong professional correspondence skills and the ability to write technical justifications that are clear, persuasive, and concise.
  • Accountability: A proven track record of working independently, managing a high-volume, and meeting deadlines.
