About The Position

The Instrument Technician, Sweeny Refinery is responsible for the installation, preventive maintenance, calibration, repair, and troubleshooting of refinery process control instrumentation. The positions are straight day jobs, subject to occasional shift work, turnarounds, call outs, and overtime. This position requires the successful completion of an online assessment. Your assessment results will be valid for one year. The Sweeny Refinery is located in Old Ocean, Texas. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization, and aromatics units, as well as access to the on-site vacuum tower and delayed coking unit, which is an asset owned by Phillips 66 Partners. Sweeny processes heavy, high-sulfur crude oil and some light, low sulfur crude oil. Domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil is transported by truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, heating oil and petroleum coke. The refinery receives crude oil by pipeline and via tankers, through terminals on the Gulf Coast, including a deepwater terminal at Freeport. Refined products are distributed throughout the Midcontinent region, southeastern and eastern United States by pipeline, barge and rail car. Refined products are also exported to Latin America by waterborne cargo.

Requirements

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
  • Valid driver's license
  • Associate’s degree or higher in Instrument Technology or Electronics Technology
  • Willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to: Lift up to 75 pounds
  • Climb up to 250 feet in height
  • Work near large, hot, high-speed machines
  • Work in enclosed spaces, such as tanks and silos
  • Work overtime
  • Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and heat
  • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
  • Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
  • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (including but not limited to items such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection, fall protection)
  • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases, that may be under high pressure
  • Read at a level to understand safety procedures, work procedures, work permits, and instruction manuals written in English

Responsibilities

  • Install, remove, calibrate, and repair refinery electronic digital, analog, and pneumatic process control instruments
  • Tune instrument control loops
  • Test and maintain instrument safety systems
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and overhaul process control valves
  • Fabricate and install small‑diameter instrument tubing
  • Test and troubleshoot programmable logic controllers
  • Prepare schematic drawings, sketches, and reports to reflect activities
  • Maintain compressor control systems
  • Maintain service reports with documentation compliance
  • Collaborate and work closely with Instrument group and engineering
