About The Position

The Instrument Man supports the Survey Party Chief in the field by operating and maintaining a variety of land surveying instruments used for construction staking, boundary, topographic, ALTA, and other types of land surveys. This role plays a key part in ensuring accurate data collection and efficient field operations. The Instrument Man is responsible for setup, calibration, operation, and data logging with total stations, GPS units, levels, and data collectors.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical training in surveying or engineering a plus.
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in land surveying or related fieldwork preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of survey principles, equipment, and procedures, preferred.
  • Ability to learn and operate surveying instruments and tools with accuracy.
  • Good physical condition with the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to follow instructions.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain survey equipment including total stations, GPS receivers, data collectors, and levels.
  • Assist the Party Chief in collecting and recording accurate field data.
  • Set up and break down instruments and tripods in various terrain and site conditions.
  • Maintain field notes, sketches, and digital files as directed.
  • Mark and stake points on the ground to guide construction or mapping.
  • Ensure all instruments are charged, calibrated, and ready for daily field activities.
  • Follow safety guidelines and wear appropriate PPE during all fieldwork.
  • Communicate effectively with Party Chief and field team members.
  • Transport equipment and supplies to and from survey sites.
  • Assist with clearing brush and setting control points when necessary.
