About The Position

Assist and support the efforts of the Director of Health & Wellness to manage a high-quality health and wellness program that aligns with the community needs and upholds the YMCA standards of quality, safety, and care. The Group Exercise Instructor works directly with the health and wellness team. Your goals are to engage, recruit, and retain members by helping them achieve health and wellness goals in a group exercise setting through creative and professionally designed classes appropriate to the fitness level of participants in the class. You will use your training, experience, and subject matter expertise to design, develop, and lead safe, high-quality, goal oriented, group exercise sessions for YMCA members. Improves the health and well-being of the community the YMCA serves. Ensure a clean, safe, comfortable and enjoyable environment for members and guests while they are participating in Health & Wellness programs. Encourages member interaction and connections and builds relationships with members Organizes and provides fun, engaging and effective group exercise classes tailored to participant ability level/physical limitations, and focused on helping participants achieve their health and wellness goals. Keeps abreast of changes and trends in the fitness industry through continuing education. Ensures the cleanliness of facilities and equipment. Record all participant statistics as required by supervisor Promote member incentive programs and other YMCA programs that members would benefit from, participate in fundraising events Find appropriate substitute coverage and substitute for other Group Exercise Instructors as needed Identifies facility, equipment or pool malfunctions or other problems and troubleshoot as capable. Promptly informs the health and wellness director/coordinator of all facility, pool, equipment, or other issues. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled: attends required YMCA trainings as scheduled. Serves as a role model for a healthy lifestyle and superior “Expect the Best” customer service. Interprets the YMCA as a membership organization. Represents the YMCA positively and maintains a good and friendly relationship with the YMCA members and staff, addressing each by name. Actively participates in the Annual Campaign. Comply with YMCA policies and procedures per the employee handbook; respond to emergency situations. Have working knowledge of equipment and be able to assist members when needed Leads group fitness events, conducts one-on-one training with members, teaches and mentors subordinate trainers to do the same. Immediately report abuse, harassment, or “red-flag” occurrences, by any person or to any person, on YMCA property or attending a YMCA event. Perform all other duties as directed by the Health and Wellness Director.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have the experience to perform the required tasks confidently and professionally.
  • Must be able to communicate respectfully and effectively with class participants, superiors and co-workers.
  • Must be able to stand, move, demonstrate, lead active movement oriented classes.
  • Must have physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Must be able to lift 50+ pounds while moving supplies
  • Must be able to evaluate situations and make decisions within established policies and standards dealing with people of all socioeconomic levels
  • Must have patience to deal with high volumes of people
  • Hold national certifications in Physical Training and Group Exercises.
  • Blood borne Pathogens and Child Abuse Prevention training required within 30 days of hire.
  • Must possess skills, physical ability, and knowledge required to successfully manage the above scope of duties.
