About The Position

The Department of Philosophy at Virginia Tech is seeking applications for an Instructor position starting August 10, 2026. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Philosophy and possess teaching interests that will enhance the undergraduate curriculum and departmental community. The area of specialization (AOS) and area of concentration (AOC) are open. This role requires a commitment to fostering a supportive departmental community. The Instructor will be responsible for teaching a 4–4 undergraduate course load, including general philosophy courses such as Knowledge and Reality, Critical Thinking, Morality and Justice, and Global Ethics. While there are no research expectations, the position includes service expectations at both the department and college levels. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track, two-year appointment, with the potential for multi-year renewal contingent on performance and funding availability.

Requirements

  • A PhD in Philosophy or related field by the time of appointment
  • Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching
  • Experience mentoring students

Responsibilities

  • Teach a 4–4 undergraduate course load
  • Teach general philosophy courses, including introductory and foundational offerings such as Knowledge and Reality, Critical Thinking, Morality and Justice, and Global Ethics
  • Fulfill service expectations, including department and college service
  • Contribute positively to a supportive departmental community
