About The Position

Danville Community College developed from two institutions, Danville Technical Institute and the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute opened in 1936 as Danville Textile School, becoming Danville Technical Institute just after World War II. The Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute first began as an engineering division in 1946, and was later expanded to include the first two years of course work for all engineering, business administration, liberal arts, and science majors. Beginning in the summer of 1966, all programs taught by Danville Technical Institute were brought under the Virginia Department of Community Colleges. Effective July 1, 1968, the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute merged with the existing community college providing the comprehensive programs now offered. Teaching faculty at Danville Community College are responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, supporting college administrative requirements, and maintaining competency in their instructional field. He/she will be responsible for quality instruction and for effective participation and interest in the total affairs of the college. Under general supervision, this individual will prepare and teach integrated machining courses designed for career technical programs. The faculty member must be able to instruct a wide variety of topics within the curriculum in a laboratory environment and may be required to teach day, evening, and/or weekend hours. This posting is limited to DCC employees only. This is a full time, temporary restricted faculty position with state benefits, needed through December 2026. Continued employment is based upon availability of funds. Applicant review will begin immediately.

Requirements

  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in teaching field
  • Demonstrated experience with CNC equipment including, but not limited to, 5-axis mills, 3-axis lathes, wire EDM and CNC grinders
  • Extensive CAD/CAM experience
  • Broad understanding of carbide tooling applications, fixtures and fixture design
  • Demonstrated proficiency with precision hand tools and engineering drawing interpretation
  • Ability to work in accordance with machine shop safety best practices
  • National Institute for Metalworking Skills ( NIMS ) certifications for teaching assignment or the qualifications/experience to attain them within one year of hire.
  • 2 years of relevant industry experience in computer-integrated machining teaching field
  • Willingness to learn concepts, equipment and software as it relates to the courses and programs
  • Experience with using a variety of test equipment
  • Willingness to develop and build industry relationships
  • Commitment to the Community College mission

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and monitor lab area for daily instructional activities including equipment setup
  • Prepare for and instruct established and approved curriculum and lesson plans to students in a professional manner
  • Must possess ability to prepare/adjust curriculum and training content to relate to various audiences
  • Review and discuss syllabi requirements at the start of each term with students
  • Answer all student questions as they arise to ensure student understanding and completion of material for Industrial Maintenance
  • Ensure students are aware of safety policies and monitor for correct procedures
  • Maintain professionalism within the classroom and coach students on their professionalism
  • Manage all classroom activity including lecturing, student assistance, and lab instruction
  • Ensure students are attending lab and online coursework
  • Resolve attendance issues as needed
  • Monitor student grades, and all student interactions in student files and on database in a timely manner
  • Advise students on issues affecting their education and provide guidance as needed
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned
