About The Position

The Department of Chemistry, Physics and Atmospheric Sciences (CPAS) in the College of Science, Engineering and Technology invites applications for a full-time Instructor of Chemistry. The successful candidate will serve as a CPAS teaching faculty member in freshman and sophomore level Chemistry courses, including General Chemistry, Introduction to Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry I & II. Other responsibilities include participating in course-related, faculty-led drill sessions; guiding and mentoring under-prepared students toward JSU resources that can support course success; and assisting departmental Chemistry program recruitment efforts by participating in local school and community outreach events.

Requirements

  • Must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry or Biochemistry (with the degree in hand by the start date).
  • Must have evidence of outstanding teaching ability.
  • Academic experience working on a university campus with a culturally diverse student and faculty population.
  • Successful teaching experience in higher education including the use of inclusive, active-learning-based pedagogy.
  • Evidence of outstanding teaching ability.
  • Commitment to inclusive pedagogy and teaching excellence.
  • Proven commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and multicultural competence in an educational and work environment, and willingness to contribute to the College's strategic plan of inclusion.
  • Demonstrated success mentoring students.
  • Commitment to inclusive, evidence-based STEM teaching, learning and assessment approaches, a record of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level, and a willingness to collaborate with other program faculty in guiding and mentoring students.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to teach Organic Chemistry courses.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing course plans and materials.
  • Monitoring attendance.
  • Delivering courses and labs.
  • Leading course-related drill sessions.
  • Monitoring student progress.
  • Communicating progress and/or concerns with students.
  • Mentoring students.
  • Advising students.
  • Recording grades and submitting reports.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
